Following up on a recent talk I gave at Skye, I'll discuss a topological invariant associated to a left order on the fundamental group of a prime, closed, oriented 3-manifold. I'll also describe some instances in which a left order with non-vanishing invariant can be deformed to an order giving rise to a taut foliation, and I'll characterize which foliations can be achieved by such constructions.
