Microwave beam broadening due to turbulent plasma density fluctuations

Microwaves are widely used in fusion-relevant experiments for heating and diagnostic purposes. They suffer, however, from the problem that they have to traverse the plasma boundary, a region where substantial plasma density fluctuations are known to occur. This can significantly distort the beam and thus reduce heating efficiencies which rely on good localization of the injected microwaves (e.g. stabilization of neoclassical tearing modes). Geometrical-optics tools cannot be used to describe the interaction of the small-scale plasma density turbulence and the microwave. Instead, full-wave codes can be used which do not rely on any simplifying assumptions concerning the density variations. Here, we present a full-wave simulation (using the FDTD code IPF-FDMC) of a microwave beam with a frequency of 50 GHz injected onto a plasma with a linearly increasing background density (colour-coded in the video). A layer of turbulent plasma density has been added to, as can be seen from the video. Plotted is also the time-evolution of the absolute value of the wave electric field (the microwave is injected from the right-hand side).

Conference recordings complement scholarly research communication in traditional conference proceedings

Traditionally, research results presented at scientific conferences are published in conference proceedings. Additionally, an increasing number of conferences are recorded and the videos are subsequently published. In most cases these videos are published by the organisers on commercial platforms or directly on the conference website. Therefore, a systematic search for conference recordings is difficult. Moreover, the videos are often lost after a short time e.g. because the URL changes or external links lead to nowhere. Usually, conference websites are not maintained on a long-term basis and commercial platforms may remove videos or change the conditions for access for a variety of reasons. Finally, to ensure an unproblematic re-use of the material questions of licencing, technical quality and formats have to be solved in advance. In order to prevent the loss of conference recordings the German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) has developed the AV-Portal. The AV-Portal provides the ideal infrastructure to host, find and reuse scientific videos. It's a single access point for videos from different conferences and years. All videos are assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI). These persistent identifiers allow for reliable referencing both as stable online links and as correct citations in scholarly work. In this talk we describe how sharing scientific results via audio-visual media has become an important part of scientific communication and how conference recordings may complement the classical conference proceedings and add new value to the presented research. By discussing the whole process from pre-conference organisation to publishing and archiving the recordings we show pitfalls, best practices and opportunities of recordings for both conference organisers and participants.

FIB-SEM video of two strongly encrusted cable bacteria

FIB-SEM video composed of 501 electron backscatter images. After each image a section of 10 nm was removed and a new section was imaged. The video shows two filaments with a horizontal cross-sectional view along the length of the filament that can be seen on the right at the start of the video. The filament that is visible on the left at the start of the video follows a different direction and therefore the cross-section shows different angles. The thick layer of mineral encrustation appears as a dark seal around the filament, the ridge compartments and the cell content appear white. The encrustation is only found around the filament and not within the periplasmic space. Both filaments are strongly encrusted and the mineral crust of both filaments is partly cemented together which can be observed from 0:06 till 0:26. The encrustation is heterogeneous with an average thickness of ˜500 nm.

Coupled Ice Sheet - Climate simulation

Supplement to paper Heinrich events show two-stage climate response in transient glacial simulations in submission to Climate of the past Abstract: Heinrich events are among the dominant modes of glacial climate variability. During these events, massive iceberg armadas were released by the Laurentide Ice Sheet, sailed across the Atlantic, and caused large-scale climate changes. We study these events in a fully coupled complex ice sheet–climate model with synchronous coupling between ice sheets and oceans. The ice discharges occur as internal variability of the model with a recurrence period of 5 kyr, an event duration of 1–1.5 kyr, and a peak discharge rate of about 50 mSv, roughly consistent with reconstructions. The climate response shows a two-stage behavior, with freshwater release effects dominating the surge phase and ice-sheet elevation effects dominating in the post-surge phase. As a direct response to the freshwater discharge during the surge phase, the deepwater formation in the North Atlantic decreases and the North Atlantic deepwater cell weakens by 3.5 Sv. With the reduced oceanic heat transport, the surface temperatures across the North Atlantic decrease, and the associated reduction in evaporation causes a drying in Europe. The ice discharge lowers the surface elevation in the Hudson Bay area and thus leads to increased precipitation and accelerated ice sheet regrowth in the post-surge phase. Furthermore, the jet stream widens to the north and becomes more zonal. This contributes to a weakening of the subpolar gyre, and a continued cooling over Europe even after the ice discharge. This two-stage behavior can explain previously contradicting model results and understandings of Heinrich Events.

Movie S4. Evolution of the transformation of the idealized example of a high density city, with a probabilistic model setting, showing its transformation until 1M inhabitants would be moved, in steps of 1,000 inhabitants.

Cities are fundamental to climate change mitigation, and although there is increasing understanding about the relationship between emissions and urban form, so far this relationship has not been used to provide planning advice for urban land use. Here we present the Integrated Urban Complexity model (IUCm), a framework that computes climate-smart urban forms, which are able to cut in half emissions from urban transportation. Furthermore, we show the complex features that go beyond the normal debates about urban sprawl vs. compactness. Our results show how to reinforce fractal hierarchies and population density clusters within climate risk constraints to significantly decrease the energy consumption used for transportation in cities. The new model that we present aims to produce new advice about how cities can combat climate change.

Indexing of Special Collections for Increased Accessibility

Challenge of Discovery: Recent large-scale initiatives focused the attention of the Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida on the need for significantly expanded and enhanced metadata for our digital collections, both retrospective and prospective. This requires new tools and changing roles and responsibilities for cataloging/metadata staff, including the application of automated processes, Improved and consistent metadata practices, and the development of new taxonomies. Projects that are described include the new genealogical initiatives with Internet Archive and Family Search, Portal of Florida History, the Digital Library of the Caribbean (dLOC) and the Cuban Heritage Initiatives. We have concluded the pilot project on automated indexing and metadata generation for the Portal of Florida History using 25,000 full text records and the JSTOR thesaurus instead of the Library of Congress subject headings to automatically index the collection and create a search portal. This paper gives a report on the results of the pilot and early application of the process to the entire UF Digital Collections to extract information from our complete digital collections (over 600,000 items/12 million pages) for the Portal. Results of the pilot show significantly increased retrievability, greater depth of accessibility via detailed subject metadata and then explores application to the entire digital collection. The idea of a more automated processes going forward to allow traditional cataloging to focus on the things that need individual attention and use automated tools to develop and improve metadata for other materials is explored since the large number of items (over 12 million and growing at 100,000 pages per month) makes it impractical to use traditional means. We are working with tools that have been developed for information products and services, but can be applied effectively to library collections. This paper covers three of the main themes of the conference: 1) Exposing Grey Literature to Wider Audiences using an open search portal 2) Confronting Obstacles in Accessing Grey Literature through limited metadata tagging and keeping the collection access obscure as sub sets of the Library OPAC, and 3) the Digital Preservation project covering everything from old newspapers, personal papers and county historical collections is the Lifeline for Grey Resources but if not widely available through the internet and deeply tagged using a controlled vocabulary the simple scanning of papers only creates the new microfilm dilemma of locking data away in in accessible places.

The Waried Transport Company - A Chapter from the History of German Technology

In the 1930s, the director of the Waried shipping company took a film camera with him on his travels. It was the era of the Great Depression - and it was also the early days of the National Socialist dictatorship in Germany. Amateur filmmaker Adolf Schneider took movies of ship christenings and launchings, their concomitant celebrations and sea trials. But he also filmed vacation trips and family outings. The movies he made render a portrait of an age and a society in transition, a society heading for a catastrophe of unimaginable proportions about which it obviously had no premonition whatever.

“I’m enjoying the fiestas and gradually working towards a film documentary”
A village in Mexico and Holy Week, a hit-and-run car accident, and a tequila-drinking police chief – and a film team from Göttingen at the heart of it all. Six binder files and reels and reels of film material tell the adventure of an expedition to Mexico 30 years ago. With the “unearthing” of an ethnological film treasure, the preliminary end of the tale can be told in 2018. A contribution to the 2018 World Day for Audiovisual Heritage.
