Single Stage Pusher Centrifuge Separation of Solids and Liquids under Different Operation Conditions
This single-stage pusher centrifuge separates slurries into solid and liquid phase. The slurry is fed to the center of the rotating feed-cone from above via the bent feed pipe.
From the feed-cone the slurry is thrown into the rotating basket. While the solids collect on the slot screen to build a cylindrical cake, the liquid passes through the screen to be discharged from the filtrate housing on the left side.
The filtrate piping is removed to show the amount of filtrate discharged. The solid cake retained on the screen is pushed intermittently
into the solids collecting housing by the pusher plate. The same slurry is used for all tests. By the effect of the stroboscope, the basket seems to be at standstill.
At the rear part, the solids cake is collecting on the slot screen. By the movement of the pusher plate, the cake is pushed forward. The cake thickness increases at the same time. Where the basket is longer, cake formation starts in the same way. In front of the pusher plate the cake thickness now increases. In a short basket only thin cakes will form. The fluctuating depth of the slurry pool in the feed zone is shown clearly by the scale on the pusher plate. In a longer basket, an increased cake thickness develops. Every 4 to 5 strokes a new ring of solids piles up; the surface now appears scaly. In a very long basket, a correspondingly thick cake is formed, its height forcing the feed-cone to plunge in the slurry.
At low basket speed, a spongy, wet cake develops. On discharge from the basket, the cake disintegrates in Lumps. At high basket speed, a firm and dry cake is produced, forming a typical slope in the discharge area. At a low pusher frequency, a relatively thick cake is formed, showing a marked surface relief. At higher pusher frequency, the cake thickness decreases. The surface relief appears to be equalized. A cake is formed at every push. The level of the slurry pool varies strongly in rhythm to the pusher plate. The cake thickness is still smaller at the higher pusher frequency. Every 4 to 5 strokes, a new ring of solids piles up. Due to the great distance between the pusher plate and inlet-cone, the feed rate is now considerably increased. At small push length, the height of the cake is growing up to the calibrating feed-cone and the space behind the feed-cone is no longer visible.
At an increased push lenght, combined with the same great distance between pusher plate and inlet-cone, the slurry pool is further increased.
During the backward stroke, a cake riff appears in the slurry pool. During the reversing time of the pusher plate, new slurry is fed on top of the slurry still in the pool and not yet entirely separated. At an extreme push lenght, during the backstroke, the pusher plate clears a large area of the slot screen. The level of the slurry above the screen decreases to zero. During the forward stroke of the pusher plate, the incoming slurry quickly accumulates to form a large pool with the slurry not yet fully drained and still remaining in this area.
