Abstract Following an introduction to the experimental set-up (partial animation), the still beating heart is isolated from the thorax and perfused with solutions of adrenaline, acetylcholine and verapamil. The changes in contractile force and pulse frequency are displayed graphically and elucidated. In conclusion, cooling of the carotid sinus (the primary pacemaker) and a demonstration of the typical consequences.
