The peculiar movement characteristics of Bacillaria paradoxa are an exception to the otherwise normal gliding movement of pennate diatoms. The alga forms tabular colonies in which the cells lie with the canal-raphes together. In motion, the cells glide along these raphes and thus pull apart the colonies in various ways. Vegetative reproduction is by bidivision of the cells. The division of the nucleus in the centre of the cell is followed directly by division of the protoplasm.
