Abstract
In beekeeping the varroa mite continues to be the most significant problem. Selection for resistant bees today is thus the greatest challenge in bee breeding. After a brief introduction into the symptoms and the biology of the varroa mite, simple methods for recognizing and testing resistant colonies are presented. Further selection methods (vitality test) and the concept of tolerance mating stations are described in detail. The film includes macro footage of typical bee behavior such as brood hygiene and the symptoms of varroasis (brood damage, crippled bees). Diagrams explain complex relationships like infestation development and the significance of population size for selection.
