Morphology of Noctiluca in bright field, black field and phase contrast. Next, various scenes of food intake and defecation convey an impression of the astonishing voracity of the creatures. Another section of the film is devoted to the cell division process with the resorption of the organelles, nucleus division and new formation of the tentacles of both offshoot animals. Considerable space is given to the formation of swarmers by multiple nucleus division, still a mystery today. From various angles the film shows the development from 2-nucleus stage through 4, 8, 16 to 32-nucleus stage. Then comes the further formation of the swarmers by division of the nucleus buds right up to the final stage, a thick cap of swarmers on the empty parent-ball. The film closes with the single-flagellum swarmers being detached by the parent ball, it being pointed out that the destiny of the swarmers continues to be unsolved.
