ß-Cu-Zn-Al-samples are stressed both in tension and in compression. The microstructural changes which occur during this stressing are shown in the present film. Martensite plates appear and disappear while increasing or decreasing the applied stress. At the same time an unusual large elastic elongation of the sample is visible, a phenomenon which is known as the pseudoelasticity. The relation which exists between the macroscopic sample deformation and the stress-induced martensite formation is clearly visible. Also the transformation induced opening and closing of a previous existing grain boundary crack is shown.
