Zu der außergewöhnlichsten Tiergruppe Jamaikas gehören die 'Jamaikakrabben'. Die Insel ist ein 'hot spot' für endemische Land- und Süßwasserkrabben, mit der höchsten Artenvielfalt auf der Erde. Auf Jamaika haben sie die unterschiedlichsten Lebensräume besiedelt, von den Tiefen der Karsthöhlen bis in die Baumkronen des Regenwaldes. Der enorme Erfolg der Krabben beruht auf speziellen Anpassungen in ihrem Fortpflanzungsverhalten: einige betreiben Brutpflege wie Vögel und Säugetiere und haben ein hochentwickeltes Sozialleben. Der Film erzählt die Evolutionsgeschichte der Jamaikakrabben und folgt ihrem Eroberungszug aus dem Meer bis in die Baumkronen der Bergregenwälder.

Jamaica is not typical for the West Indian Islands. During its long isolation, a wide variety of endemic plant and animal species could develop. The Jamaican crabs belong to the most extraordinary animal groups on the island. They are endemic land and freshwater crabs with the greatest species diversity in the world. On the Caribbean island of Jamaica, they colonised different habitats from the depth of the Karst caves to the treetops of the rain forest. Their enormous success is due to adaptations in their reproductive behaviour, particularly the intense brood care. The bromeliad crab, Metopaulias depressus, also evolved a social colony life, which is unique among crabs. The movie tells the story of the evolutionary pathway of the Jamaican crabs and follows their route from the ocean to the treetops.
