Catastrophes are the beginning of a new forest cycle in the ecosystem. In extreme years, hurricane-force storms destroy entire forest plots. As a result of initial mistakes in silviculture, very large areas are frequently affected.
Thus, trees of the same age that were not adapted to the site were planted for economic reasons. In these stands, the wind causes almost unlimited havoc. Trees with damaged roots do not stand a chance.
Even beaches are affected then. After a storm, the trees damaged in the forest are removed from the stand. Modern silviculture has learned from damage of this type. Today, monocultures are seldom used in reforestation.
Species adapted to the site are chosen with increasing frequency.
