The formation and growth of austenite during heating a ferrite-pearlite steel St 52 is shown using cine film. During observation of the polished surface of the specimen in a hot stage microscope the austenite grain boundaries are visible as grooves. The growth of the grain is indicated by the disappearance and the new formation of such grooves.
