The revolving interruption of flow at the rotor blades, also termed "rotating stall", is explained using an axial compressor stage for an example. Diagrams, animated drawings and special effects show how this flow phenomenon arises. In a series of tests on a single-stage axial blower with variously throttled fluid flow and two different types of blading this phenomenon is rendered visible by flags in the flow and extreme slow-motion film shots.
