Nach einem kurzen Überblick über die Geschichte der Geburtshilfe spricht Prof. Kirchhoff über das von ihm propagierte "lange Becken" als mechanisches Geburtshindernis. Er führt die Entstehung des langen Beckens zurück auf die Assimilation von Wirbelkörpern und eine Entwicklungshemmung, die der Ausbildung der normalen weiblichen Beckenform entgegensteht. Röntgenbilder von verschiedenen Varianten dieser Beckenanomalie sowie die statistische Auswertung von 4000 Entbindungen an der Universitäts-Frauenklinik Göttingen, unter denen 253 lange Becken gefunden wurden.

After a brief overview of the history of obstetrics, Prof. Kirchhoff speaks about the "long pelvis" propagated by him as a mechanical obstacle to childbirth. He attributes the formation of the long pelvis to the assimilation of vertebral bodies and an inhibition opposing the development of the normal female pelvic shape. X-ray images of different variants of this pelvic anomaly as well as the statistical evaluation of 4000 deliveries at the University Women's Clinic in Göttingen, among which 253 cases of the long pelvis were found.
