Abstract

Radiation effects on HeLa cells were recorded cinematographically, using the phase contrast process. Single doses of conventional X-rays (180 kV), high energy electrons (15,8 MeV) and cobalt 60 gamma rays (1,17 and 1,33 MeV) were administered. Radiation dose ranged from 500 to 4000 R, using a dose rate of 100 R/min. It can be demonstrated that the morphological changes after radiation damage scarcely differ with regard to radiation quality. Cell proliferation stopped almost immediately and cell death gradually increased after irradiation. Cells which were irradiated in early mitosis showed considerable morphological changes caused by radiation damage: chromosome bridges during anaphase, incomplete cell division, increase formation of multinuclear and giant cells, spontaneous cell death.
