In time-lapse the film shows plasmolysis, i. e. the removal of the living protoplasma from the cell wall under the effect of water withdrawing media in cells of the outer and inner epidermis of the bulb scales of Allium cepa. The film shows the plasmolysis, deplasmolysis and replasmolysis in a glucose solution and the various plasmolysis images in KCl and CaCl2 solutions on outer epidermis cells coloured red by anthocyanin. In the phase-contrast and the dark field, the formation of Hecht's threads is demonstrated on the inner epidermis cells during plasmolysis with CaCl2.
