The film demonstrates and explains the process of chip formation when turning steel with carbide cutting tools. Additionally, longitudinal machining of C 45 W 3 steel by a traversing cutter is shown at normal frequency and in slow motion. The film then deals in detail with an approximately orthogonal cut. An animated drawn film sequence of the cutting process at the chip root explains the formation of chip lamellae, which slide off under the angle of shear. In a photomicrographic shot of the machining of 16 MnCr 5 steel at a low cutting speed, the deformation of the crystalline structure, formation of lamellae and throwing up of chips are all clearly visible, as is the progress of shaping the material being machined. Finally, the influence on chip formation of alterations in cutting speed and angle of cut is demonstrated by slow motion sequences taken at 800 and 8000 frames per second. Low cutting speeds give rise to the formation of discontinuous chips. Small and particularly negative angles of cut increase the deformation at the chip root and promote the formation of build-up edges.
