English | English Survey of the various kinds of reproduction if Suctorians. Asexual reproduction occurs by budding. External (exogenous) budding is shown in three examples. In Paracineta limbata only one swarmer is formed. Ephelota gemmipara produces several swarmers, simultaneously. In Tachyblaston ephelotensis development is an alternation of generations, in which one parasitic and one generative generation alternate. Acineta tuberosa and Tokophrya lemnarum (with peculiar processes in the macronucleus) serve as examples of internal (endogenous) budding. The metamorphosis of the swarmers is shown in Tokophrya lemnarum and Ephelota gemmipara. Sexual reproduction of Suctorians is a conjugation. While conjugation in most species (e. g. Tokophrya lemnarum) follows the same pattern as in other ciliates, it has been modified in Ephelota gemmipara into an "anisogamonty" one gamont ("microgamont") being resorbed by the other ("macrogamont"). |
