Planktonic organisms have by definition only limited capabilities for locomotion. Due to the vast diversity of planktonic taxa belonging to all biotic kingdoms, very diverse ways of locomotion have evolved as well as a variety of morphological, and physiological adaptations for buoyancy regulation. In Ctenophores the body is divided by cilia fused to combs arranged in 8 longitudinal rows. They beat synchronously from the mouth to the apical pole of the body, pushing ctenophores through the water with their mouth opening in front.
