Die Organismen des Planktons sind definitionsgemäß nur eingeschränkt zu Ortsveränderungen aus eigenem Antrieb in der Lage. Basierend auf der großen Formenvielfalt haben sich sehr unterschiedliche Fortbewegungsweisen entwickelt, ebenso wie zahlreiche morphologische und physiologische Anpassungen zur Aufrechterhaltung des Schwebezustandes. Bei den Ctenophoren sind Cilien miteinander zu Wimperplättchen verklebt und in 8 Reihen um die Körperlängsachse herum angeordnet. Die Wimperplättchen dieser Längsreihen schlagen synchron von der Mundöffnung zum apikalen Pol, so daß die Rippenqualle mit der Mundöffnung voran durch das Wasser geschoben wird. Planktonic organisms have by definition only limited capabilities for locomotion. Due to the vast diversity of planktonic taxa belonging to all biotic kingdoms, very diverse ways of locomotion have evolved as well as a variety of morphological, and physiological adaptations for buoyancy regulation. In Ctenophores the body is divided by cilia fused to combs arranged in 8 longitudinal rows. They beat synchronously from the mouth to the apical pole of the body, pushing ctenophores through the water with their mouth opening in front.
