The jay when anting carries out on the hand the typical movements of active anting, in that he, after pecking movements with his beak, strokes along the inside of his wings and folds his tail towards the front. On the other hand he moves his wings forward and supports them on the ground on order to enable ants to creep up them. Only the latter attitude, that of passive anting, supplies him with formic acid, whilst the active movement with the beak takes place without him having seized ants. Cinematography with 64 f/s shows the extremely rapid process more clearly. Finally once more at the end a survey of the complete process is given with 24 f/s.
