Abstract

The salt lakes of the Atacama desert are almost without outflow in front of the volcanoes of the High Andean Cordillera. They are absorbing the melting water of the mountains, which evaporates in the depressions. Salt minerals are crystallizing, remaining and sedimenting over millions of years. There are even compounds with rare metals like lithium. Lithium is mined here for batteries, among other things. In spite of the very arid climate and the extreme altitude of more than 3000 meters there exists a fauna rich in species.
