Abstract

In his lecture Eric Kandel (Nobelprize for Physiology 2000) talks about the history of brain research and the molecular basis of memory. From the famous concepts of Gall, Flourens, Broca, Wernicke, Lashley, Penfield and Milner to modern Alzheimer-research he delineates, how the function of different brain areas has been discovered. Using the results of his own research on seasnails and mice Kandel explains the function of memory on an anatomical, physiological and molecular level. Introductory remarks in German.
