Male and female bonobos have developed different behavioural strategies. Although the females are not usually related, they have close social ties through fur-combing, sharing food etc. In competitive situations they cooperate against groups of males, resulting in their monopolizing food resources. In contrast to chimpanzees, bonobo males exhibit no close friendships or mutual support.
