Stachelameise.

The ponerine Leptogenys ocellifera of Ceylon lives in very populous colonies. It frequently establishes its nest in termite mounds. From the nest a consolidated paths (permanent tracks) lead day and night into the bush-covered surroundings. They are used during day and night. Having reached the peripher section of these paths, workers on the look-out for prey will swarm out onto the hunting grounds. They mainly hunt termites and earth worms. As soon as a scout has found a prey, it signals to its companions that are treading the path nearest where it is. This is achived in a purely chemical way, by laying an alarm trail from the source of food to the permanent track with the secretion from its venom gland. The novices are directed towards the prey by this alarm trail. They intensify the venom trail in turn, on their way back to the permanent track, so that in the space of a few minutes hundreds of workers may be attracted to the prey, which they then overpower by joining forces, and carry home to their nest.
