The semiterrestrial mangrove crab, Goniopsis cruentata, lives in the mangrove swamps of tropical and subtropical coasts. When a female appears the males begin to make waving movements synchronously with their equally sized chelipeds. The movement is composed of a slow lifting phase and a fast downstroke of the chelipeds. Series of wavings are alternated with pursuit of the female and displacement feeding. The female reacts initially with defensive movements: one or two walking legs are lifted and directed towards the approaching male. Finally the female allows the male to come closer. The male tries to come into leg contact with the female and may also touch the carapace of the female with a leg. The female stays still ot may even slowly move towards the male. In this phase irregular circling movements of the claws underneath the body are occasionally observed made by the female. Eventually the male jumps onto the female and turns her to a sternum-to-sternum position. During copulation the male often sinks on his back.
