Der Kupfertagebau Chuquicamata, das tiefste von Menschen gemachte Loch ist etwa 1 km tief. Der Kupferanteil des Gesteins liegt bei nur etwa 1%, aber die Masse des Gesteins macht den Abbau lohnend. Das Kupfer drang entlang von Störungen in das Gestein ein (West Fissure Zone) infolge der Subduktion der Nasca-Platte unter die Anden. The copper open pit mine Chuquicamata, the deepest man-made hole, is about 1 km deep. The copper content of the rocks is only 1 per cent, but the mass of rocks makes mining profitable. The copper was rising along faults (West Fissure Zone) due to the subduction of the Nasca plate below the Andes. A group of students from Göttingen is visiting the open pit mine in the Atacama desert (North Chile).
