Complex nest-building behaviour is an exeption with parrots. The peculiarity of the rosy-faced lovebird, the fact that it tucks nesting material into its outer feathers for tranportation, is one of the most unusual nest-building activities of the birds. The film shows peach-faced lovebirds with and without breeding experience which cut bark into thin strips, tuck the strips into their rump feathers and lower back feathers and carry them to the nesting box. The film documents the significance of individual experience both in the integration of genetically fixed behavioural elements into complex nest-building activities and for the synchronisation of pair behaviour.
