14Hedrich, Rainer et al.Potassium transport proteins, so called potassium-channels, represent essential elements in the control of stomatal aperture. The performance of these microvalves and the related influence on the gas exchange in plants is illustrated by 3D-animations. A major part of the video focusses on the patch-clamp technique, a method, developed to record the activity of a single ion-channel molecule in vivo and in real time. The set up for high-resolution current recordings is introduced, an experiment is carried out and analysed. Stomatal movement and for the first time the formation of guard cell protoplasts are monitored using time-lapse cinemicrography.

2Hedrich, Rainer et al.The molecular 3-dimensional structure of a potassium channel protein is resolved following protein purification, crystallization and X-ray analysis. For the first time the growth of protein crystals is visualized. The region responsible for potassium selectivity is depicted in a 3D reconstruction of the channel protein and the underlying molecular mechanism of potassium transport is explained.

1Hedrich, Rainer et al.The molecular strategies which have led to the identification of the first ion-channel gene in plants are presented. The genetic blue-print of the guard cell potassium channel protein is unravelled by the use of modern molecular biology techniques.
