The video shows an external view (take with iPhone) of a micro fluid device based on Deterministic Lateral Displacement. The cells are sorted by size as they pass though an array of pillars, and different size fractions leave the device through different outlets. Adipocytes have extremely broad size distributions and are known to have many size-based properties implicated in a variety of metabolic conditions and diabetes. They are however notoriously fragile and have been very difficult to sort by size historically. This new method will make it considerably easier to study size-based adipose properties and their links to health.
