Abstract
In this panel discussion, a group of industry leaders discuss their experiences with SCiON so far, and their vision for SCiON’s future applications. Led by Fritz Steinmann, Senior Network & Security Architect at SIX, panelists discussed difficulties in the implementation of SCiON, what benefits the implementation of SCiON would bring and their vision for SCiON technology. Sam Hitz, the CTO of Anapaya systems, discusses the biggest challenges when implementing SCiON technology. Thomas Wacker, the Director Core Network Engineering at UBS, outlines how UBS deployed SCiON independently without assistance from telco providers and the advantages and difficulties that this brought. He also discussed how SCiON is a driver for innovation and how UBS will bring this production to maturity this year. Stefan Berg, Head of Product Management at Swisscom, brought his opinion from the perspective of service providers, and how the initiative for SCiON was initiated at Swisscom. Eliseo Rodriguez, the head of B2B Connectivity at Sunrise, outlines several advantages brought about by SCiON. SCiON prevents problems from occurring, in contrast to most solutions today which address problems as they occur. He also outlines several challenges in the implementation of SCiON, such as a need for greater technical expertise on the topic in order to drive sales and development. Daniel Bertolo, Head of Networks from SWITCH, highlights the obstacles in the development of SCiON and how to develop SCiON further as a global research network to transport big amounts of data.
