My name is Susanna Monatin, I come from Italy, and I'd like to thank the organizers for inviting me as a keynote speaker and for inviting 4Science as a sponsor for this conference. I'm really honored to be here and to be among such distinguished people and especially hosted by this country under these circumstances, which make my message even more urgent.
00:28
Knowledge means peace and knowledge is removing barriers to access. And this means education, this means intellectual independence and freedom from propaganda and from tyranny.
00:45
So this brings peace. Peace means safety, means food, but also means resources for education and for research, and research produces knowledge. So this is really very, very much related. And well, I've been working for many years with 4Science and before to
01:06
make open access happen, open access to knowledge, to research data, to research results. Everything means a better world, a world of peace, where all the people together can fight against our enemies, such as pandemics, the climate
01:22
change, and can explore the space to find a new world, where to go when we will all be migrants someday from this planet. Well, today, we'll talk about a lot of things. My time is limited, so I will not touch every point, but I will leave you with the slides.
01:41
And especially what is for science and what are our principles and why it is important to have open access and open science, and especially for research data and research results, and what are the open access trends and possibly a positive message,
02:02
and why we chose this space as the solution for serving the community of open access. So 4Science is basically supporting some open source solutions that enable open science, open research, and open access.
02:28
Mainly this space for open access to publications and research data, Dataverse for open access to data, open journal systems for open access to publications, and everything is open source, free to use, and supported by large communities.
02:51
And working with the standards, open standards and protocols, such as the guidelines of open air and participating in
03:01
the EOSC that has been mentioned before by my distinguished predecessors and the standards like ORCID, like the AAAF APIs, like the Serif model for research information, collaborating with communities for open access repositories such as CORE.
03:23
What we believe in is basically working with the open source software to make open access initiatives of institutions really sustainable with open standards and protocol to enhance interoperability and make all the knowledge
03:41
produced in the world really available to everybody. And this can be done in a secure way. For instance, as a trusted cloud provider or the cloud security alliance, we want our partners we work with to be really secure in this information science world.
04:06
We are based on open science principles against proprietary products, which can result in a vendor lock-in and become obsolete, while open solutions that are sustained by worldwide communities and use open standards and protocols really enhance the opportunity to provide
04:30
open knowledge from institutions who produce it, open knowledge that helps solving the world's very most pressing problems. Our principles as enablers of open science is to use open tools powered by
04:48
communities and to make the solutions able to provide fair data, findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable, and interoperability is announced by the use of open standards and protocol, like Oracle, like
05:06
the Serif data model, like IIIF open standards, compliance and quality compliance, especially with the open air guidelines and all the practices, best practices of the open communities for research,
05:22
and also with a focus on security for all these solutions. The road to follow is open access because it increases the impact of research by encouraging researchers to share, it generates tangible reputation and credibility, both for
05:42
researchers and for their institutions, and it disseminates knowledge for the benefit of humanity and the progress of humanity. The future open access trends make me very optimistic because based on the data provided by AMP Paywall, it seems that by 2040,
06:04
we will be able to have 100% important, it's very important that all institutions and even all individuals can contribute to that. And you see here in the figure, the trend, which is taken from the Royal Registry, the trend
06:27
for institutions to adopt an open access repository, and also, mandates can be mentioned, should be mentioned because mandates from research funders, from governments, from institutions themselves with their own policy, really help open access to happen,
06:47
and open access mandates have been issued by such prestigious universities such as Harvard, such as the MIT, the Duke, or the University College London, ETH Zurich, just to mention a few examples overseas and in Europe.
07:08
Horizon Europe is funding research and mandating open access for the dissemination of knowledge that is produced with this money, so as European citizens, we should all be really proud to participate in these projects that are funded by our
07:26
community, and to provide open access to what we produce as research results, funded by public money, funded by the European citizens. Open access trends in Europe include initiatives as important as the Open Science Cloud, EOSC, and it has
07:46
been well explained before, so I will not focus on this, but as for science, we are really very proud to participate in projects and programs that are sponsored and funded by EOSC and Open Air.
08:07
We also agree with the statement of UNESCO, the UNESCO Vision for Open Science, to assist the entire repository community in implementing the foundational standards, technologies, and functionalities to support Open Science.
08:25
And why we chose this space, because it is the most widely adopted open source technology for institutional repositories. We believe in the community work, we participate in the community, we are leaders in the DSpace community to provide more and more functional services to the research community in a way that is sustainable,
08:49
free from licenses, free from proprietary lock-in policies, and enabling all institutions to contribute to open access, to open science, and to open data.
09:04
In a sustainable, in a robust and secure way, to be able to collect, to preserve, and to disseminate digital objects, which can be research results or research data sets. And as you see from the open door, this space is the most widely diffused platform, and I think, I believe
09:30
that we should concentrate our efforts on providing something that is fit for all institutions and can be announced by community efforts.
09:41
So in the end, I see, I would like to say that every individual can do something, even every small effort for open access can be significant. Every institution producing knowledge carries a responsibility towards disseminating this
10:02
knowledge, making it available for all citizens of the world. And at ForScience, we are really committed, we help institutions to make open access happen in a sustainable way. We try to do our part for an open and peaceful world. Thank you very much.
