Abstract
An essential component of a comprehensive hydraulic engineering system analysis is the availability of high-quality measurement data. The BAW's technical infrastructure therefore includes extensive equipment for carrying out special investigations in nature. Examples of this are: - Investigations on flow dynamics and suspended matter dynamics in estuaries - Recording of dynamic parameters of ships - Loading of structures on federal waterways The measuring equipment is stored, maintained and prepared for use in the field measuring laboratory of the BAW in Hamburg.

BAU Hamburg has extensive and sophisticated instrumentation at its disposal for the execution of in-situ measurements. For example, acoustic current meters provide important data for the detection of flow dynamics in estuarine and coastal areas.
In cooperation with universities and other scientific institutions, research questions on small -scale processes such as turbulence and density stratification are in the foreground. Investigations on the interaction between seagoing vessels and waterways are an additional main topic of in-situ measurements.
This includes, for instance, the vessel-induced wave flow on banks and structures, as well as the dynamic behavior of seagoing vessels while navigating in extreme shallow water, such as estuaries and canals. These investigations are carried out on both large and small scales.
The necessary preparation and post-processing for these measurements takes place in the Field Measurement Laboratory of the BAU Hamburg.
