Abstract
Numerical simulation showing the entire model evolution of the reference run (REF). A ca. 360 km wide basin forms during a 50 Myr long rifting period. Exhumed mantle material floors the basin bounded by two asymmetric hyperextended magma-poor passive margins. The upper mantle convects below the lithosphere, stabilising its mechanical thickness and the model’s thermal field. We do not apply external deformation to the model between 50-110 Myrs in model history. Later than 110 Myrs, we shorten the thermally equilibrated basin-margin system. In response to this convergence, a lithospheric scale shear zone, which evolves into a stable asymmetric subduction, forms below one of the passive margins. The exhumed mantle is subducted during basin closure and sediments accumulate in the trench. These sediments are incorporated into a growing orogenic wedge, which is dominated by thrust-sheet formation. Colouring as indicated in the article.
