Abstract
The current pandemic has forced upon us a new perspective on what truly matters when it comes to higher education. We've realised how fragile the modus operandi is on which most universities are still relying. Once the pandemic had taken away the option for students and professors to meet on campus for lectures and written assessments, most universities had a hard time providing alternative ways of teaching and learning. At the same time, many students realised that their studies hadn't prepared them for the challenges they were facing during the pandemic. Essential skills hadn't been part of the curriculum, and their universities hadn't empowered them to develop a mindset capable of coping with the circumstances with which they were confronted. This talk will suggest new ways for universities to develop a less fragile organisational setup and a learning concept that not just incorporates elements of agile thinking and working but also empowers students to develop a mindset that would allow them to cope with fundamental challenges like the corona pandemic. In this talk, I will try to outline aspects of a future university: - an organisation that is not just resilient but anti-fragile - a learning concept focussing on student empowerment and 21st-century skills, aligned with research activities - a university shaped by meaningful interactions with local and regional stakeholders. Corona has forced us to rethink higher education. In this talk, I will try to condense the lessons learned, draft a model of the future university and describe a way forward.
