Our understanding of the universe has exploded in the past 50 years, largely thanks to incredible advances in detector technology that allow us to precisely measure light and particles of all kinds. In this talk, I will describe some of the world's most sensitive detector technologies. These detectors often exploit strange properties of matter, or push up against the laws of physics in the most extreme physical conditions. I will also highlight the scientific discoveries that these new technologies have made possible.
