me with the task of the do doctors I am gonna
introduce soon someone's song and Thomas Kahan were welcome on stage I don't tell you live with more about you in a 2nd Thomas and they are researching in the area about the question of what happens when algorithm is becoming your boss for example was war and was on the platform manic mechanical turk
and this will be the subject of your a few to presentations but before all a bit more about you you're is a lecturer and writer and researcher and he was a Fulbright Scholar New York and also he was Fellow of the Metropolitan Museum that also in New York and he found that in his hometown this shown have newcomer from high for right I have entirely told Maryam for that so but he is the founder of the Prince Bean Festival in High for a digital cultural festival which explores the seams between digital culture in cinema and the audiovisual arts maybe so that would like transmit other he in Germany and so other Republican and Thomas the work is the has about her degree in Business administration from the as coupling University in Lins but is also now lecturing at the lot funnier when he was due to include work and he is a Fellow of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and what they'd studying about they will tell you in a 2nd I think you also work before was Thom steps got maybe there will be some remarks also and I think Leora you're the 1st this presentation so here it comes what happens when algorithms becomes
your boss please the
the the the the the
might OK the purpose of this on a bit of a silly intro a bit of a silly introduction was
to start by saying that when we talk about toolbar when we talk about these new platforms specifically about Wilbur and I like the healing platforms I'll
point of departure and that's the point of that departure also for my research conducted with I commandment movement which is in the audience of and fleets and is that all Bernhard has a problem controlling the crowds like I have a challenge controlling you guys you guys don't owe me anything he could to stop and leave at any given 2nd right but look how easy it was to manipulate you look at how willing you were to put this debate that's very kind of you it was super-risky I haven't planted some people in the audience to participate just in case you know and have lines if you want participate and so on and so forth but you that which is very nice and over as a similar challenge glottal's basically independent people officially this allows over to be use them a bit and minimize labor
costs but it does mean that they can't always know drivers will show up at a specific time and place this is from Scheiber and Walt about at the New York times and this is the challenge or the lack of control they're facing right this is the challenge how to make them do what we want them to do what Hoover wants him to do in this case and this is a story
very interesting story from last year's in New York Times that says that will is using psychological tricks to push its drivers buttons and now you can guess what kind of psychological clicks like saying something that's will make them go to the next level and the up like in the world of games the idea is that people want to participate people 1 2 genes stuff in the heat losing stuff so it will make them think about it will be able to control the action and then basically predict them better so the
old things says Ellis Sohlman which is a driver for then LiveDeal thing is like a video game for instance if you wanna make 240 things if you wanna leave over in the middle of the day making 240 BC were 6 dollars away from making 40 dollars in that earning are you sure you want to go offline and you can be pretty sure that most people then say I wanna keep driving right because this is so hard to click the go offline but enough to you see this we are going to talk
medicine but also Thomas today about it the subject of follow always speak management management on platforms the challenge of course is that
we have a smaller relatively efficient companies not with a lot of employees but they need to govern a lot of employee is specific like let's call them independent contractors it's not clear of course their reading employs independent that's the major question that may be believed to the discussion but what all that is operating all these tricks for schemes it's called the Whitbeck Management and that's the government's undertaken by software of boyfriends to quote taller multitude of workers whose test performance in this case to drive people from place to place is central to the enterprises effectiveness and like the
hailing like all that does is of always at management and there was a nice paper will was about in Stock 2 years ago that says that basically what toolbar operates of in formation in power symmetries they everything that i've as no and very very small part of the picture Dana where things are headed the have the full picture but the divers amount and not only that the track drivers behavior they evaluate the performance you know those started in base even gets and they automatically implement decisions of divers are acting badly they could log them off the system immediately they could cut them loose that's almost not the case right with local I was with the jobs that we know right because in jobs when we know when when we have a problem when we have an issue with somebody to turn to we have a boss to go with somebody to shout at with somebody to complain to and what it's ironic
really all believe attracts the autonomous workers that people who want to do more work will be don't have a boss the latter is the thing you want your own boss if you want you work if you don't want you don't work and how much I was you do each day we ask it depends on you divers can stop at any time they decide how many hours to work they pride themselves in being independent they don't really identify highly with the company as we do with like local I mean always at the additional companies and they have no direct human supervision but did not
surprisingly that tensions forming upright the independent autonomous labor is always ironically facing the most difficult controllers scheme ever a company that knows everything about them knows what they're doing it every time they try to be as as they said they have over their performance and they can fire them all of which have them quit at any point of time so the tensions are being formed around the issues of transparency do but Eitel doesn't always know why is it being cut off wise is the angle that out for now why doesn't get jobs with us and get him when he feels all she feels the need to and maybe also kind of a complicated is that the work in isolation in full isolation they don't have colleagues right they are in the cow with their passengers but they don't have anybody to talk to and if they have reached some sort of crisis if they do that they need to e-mail the company they don't have nobody to talk to usually there's no that either the human driver half-line let's say they need to talk with another with them with an e-mail system in this case and I'll give you 1
example pull your guys notable point is so Paul is the shell that waltz kind of all shared the joy as shell the passenger experience is an example for what I call now the lack of transparency and control and if you google this if you just look at what blue results when you look at the will poor you'll find that this is a very common paid will % watch it others expect from mobile portable police officer drivers will poor I hate is aided by everyone basically so the reason they hate will pull imagine this NLU a few of the reason they hate it is because once they accept and usually they don't have any choice but to accept will pull to date losing even more control
than the had form the get-go because although poor means they they don't use anymore they have every angle as over correct OK so they are basically starting to drive and suddenly the computer the other was selling them there's a passenger waiting queue in like 3 streets away so the entire course is built automatically by this bolder and people come and go like a us but it's a bus that supposedly you control but you're not really wants you hours basically beginning this although pull you never know when all of the passengers at you you never know when you are off the job basically you were stocking this although poor mode with the computer sending you places sometimes very far away and tell you exactly where and who to pick up you don't have almost no choice in the matter and if you decline dozily Qantas basically you get your points reduced and if you get enough points leaders you get off logged off the system so they don't have a lot of choice in the matter and I warn you the next slide has a lot of text but it's a really important citation from the form we've been following at said the quality will pull by the way the rivals like to refer them in the ruble
form through as scuba approved and he says think about how crazy it is we're trying to set destination the me that overcrowded city using another app to navigate and suddenly wham like George Michael the sports machines guide everything changes through the partner app while we drive forcing us to rearrange everything including the together with 1 hand still on the will then it turns into a merry-go-round in which people are coming and departing it in non-sequential order surprise it hasn't been banned by local officials instead of being embraced as some sort of a shuttle service so it's a very it's also a
bit of a dangerous situation but what the levels of reporting to us and we've been interviewing the rivals in the last 2 years both in New York and in London with the arrivals report to us back is that the field del being treated more 1 more like all boats that there should they don't have really control they don't really understand why things are happening to them why they are happening in this although and is the 1 to complain if they have something wrong something done wrong to them they have no 1 to talk to so what do they do how do drivers regain though come toward how do they main human in an age of of always make management and that's exactly what we research
so the 1st thing is that we saw in the decision that they're doing is that they're guessing always sense-making the system though making up stories like the storm was we sometimes basically using our culture in our legion to make sense of the world and it's 1 those the don't understand why certain things are coming or it why certain things are happening to them so they make up stories about them is a story for instance let's say I do 70 lighting and lift and then we need 5 more to make a bonus or together normally firelights can make me like an hour and a half to 2 but those you know those last 5 right cygni like 7 8 10 hours you know that's because they don't want to give me that the right at 1st they guess so here's an overdrive relief that i've in this case is complaining that left on knowing
the ball he betting is it's is is dry busy not letting him drive people because they don't wanna pay that's the key a kind of stories we see over and over again in that will form so those stories being socially enforced because drivers tend to agree with them and then suddenly develop even bigger stories and we see the Commission of stories of Smith for urban legends no not saying it's all wrong It's all lies of course it's not but it's also probably not all true but the levels have no choice they don't know anybody too talkative so they talk to each other as is they don't know a lot of people in person they talk to through a computer through the mobile phone in Windows story grow and when those still we developed then the act up on them so what do they do they resist the
system and we see sometimes the actual attempts if not to unionize them to form strikes them to form some sort of resistance of supporters against the ruble system in this case not taking will pull again and you see in the form we the partners will oppose slavery and will stand for right until the last 1 of us know pool for life was with me so it's a very much like lemmings that obvious sort of like mention of allusions sort of like puddles but this is this the system and sometimes it even works for them and these are incidents sometimes in different cities some see fight harder than others some cities it's better than others and
sometimes it's 60 is it's let's say the each limited success with some of the attempts is another story about resistance my mom this is woman over
driver my mom would make dinners with all this but I wouldn't the olives as a grew up my mother would ask me if I liked all of after years and years of telling a I would not at all is she stopped her attempt to Fumio the olives and this is a story that goes to to show them that we should not give up that we should always tell them what we willing or not willing to do to stay you meant to fight for the lights in this case not to take over pool so that's 1 option another option is switching the
system and 1 of the city's with research is New York in New York has a lot of options all Selberg there's lefters June was bought by get so there's scant those via and levels basic ever know if you ever experience this but the levels of a multitude of phones when you enter now it looks almost like a cockpit in the plane because of so many screens to look at which is also a bit dangerous but let's leave that when the site the choose all the time they are with their eyes on multiple platforms at once and he said Tuesday favorite company have all been all these things apps from different car hailing companies I get a customer and if on the way June on which is in this case of a favorite company affairs Juneau have also have that request a cancer that will be and I get you know so the ghetto consulate of and such another hour levels as we all know that these companies like to offer better insertive incentives to those to miss that Ms. sometimes so if you logged off over will there was a hairy forgot about us how about will give you a bonus so they start to be all again the strategic about it to dive over for 1 week then she on next list 3rd and then these which for a formal bow to June and they start sharing the schemes of how to make it work financially for them to which leads me to my next and I think last point because the other the action that they sometimes form is gaining or
tricking which if you think about it is there anything more you men than trying to game and trick the systems orbits are not usually trying to track game you but humans and that's also a flaw in gas and some social relations they try to treat and game you so is it all fell in love and open and there's a lot of attempts actually our research got a lot of news because all we quoted as saying that sometimes July those are all trying to organize together to log off at once to increase Serge and of course as newspaper and mass media goes they turn it into this crazy Stoli when it's done all the time so it's not that all the time but it's 1 option of gaining intriguing back the system there is actually an app I think now it's illegal but those an app are folder that that let you see the passenger in app at the same time and give you out more tricking advice because he knows the thing a member the lack of transparency the devil is not
supposed to look at the search prices all the search situation from the passenger app so they're trying to coordinate a sister trying to see both the passenger view and the long view to see where it makes the most financial sense and it's actually not so uncommon that either will ask you while driving if you can tell you what's the situation from your side as a passenger because he can see how much or where it's more profitable to go with some cases and those another case I tell them this there there were other divers said I'm going to drop you off and on the trip and this is sort of legal but they do it sometimes then I drop them off and I cancel so they can't dates me so if they have a customer which they feel that made them poorly they basically drop down and cancel so quickly so they won't get a complaint of course something they do get a complaint but that's another sort of incident it we have seen in the forms and again this looks like very malicious very may be bad the example of the behavior of a driver behavior but again look at it from below point of view now facing the mole inhumane and nothing in you may like human rights violation but the new men in the sense that being in isolation without transparency there being treated like all boats so I say that they are gaining in tricking the system not just because of financial gain that's the easy answer they are also doing this because that makes them feel you men again in the face of full cannibalistic management so this is the model in toto and again independence
eponymous labored meets the most controlled management ever of always think management intentions of formed and basically the result is that the error guessing the system they are starting to develop these myths and stories and then the end up resisting switching organisms and not always
most people very compliant plate you were with the collapse but some people do but the bell against so some concluding thoughts is it's really deal of the that i've all Deligne has mentioned the 2 2017 was the of
the diver you know they had a lot of trouble in the last year to regulation sexual-harassment you name it but they said we're going to invest in the i've and it's not really clear that they've done so actually it's not really clear what this current situation with drivers recently
federal courts in the U.S. that they're not in pro is but now I think just today in California there was another warning again not further on in California that they might say that's were probably paved the way for them to be employees and this fight is very very very close from finish line so it's really not clear can we build a sustainable business model in which we show consultants lead levels like human I know a lot of the sessions here we can work them out we can work it out sorry I went to do exactly with this question I can tell you wanted a jewel does it have a you meant their customer service and while it's really hard to maintain its that is exactly what is needed to give them the feeling that our human again and we'll interview jewel drivers Juneau was now bots by gets but back then and you know and they said the fact that we can talk to a human even if it doesn't help us if even if she or he doesn't know but immediately the fact that we talked human makes all the difference so this is a reassuring thought it like to end with and pass it to Thomas so we're given that will give the perspective of how to make more participatory platforms attributes read art workers failing but insuring thoughts is that in this age
in the face of automation where it seems like the road is paved to go to autonomous cars July those what we assume the them well we still drive the divers will find creative ways to use the same technology to we gain their sense of control and allow themselves to exercise their own
agency to be human again thank you very much thank you you're not good arsenals from
my side of monomers Tomasky when presenting research here today that I conducted with Marcus and Meyer and Cardie Ishiba and let's just dive right in the as many platforms see
themselves as Marketplace's all or as a service provider and as the URA vividly demonstrated to you platforms such as work care little 40 human worker let alone gift and say when how to improve their working conditions so what do workers do in a case of we will they all our Friedrich work arounds around algorithms and wherever possible and use forums
such as you move people to exchange knowledge about best practices mechanical turk of which is the digital assembly line for outsourcing microtasks it's very similar in that regards mechanical turk sees itself as a marketplace the platform does hardly offer any instruments for workers to issue complains workers simply do not get heard on this platform so when enter Kras meet again in outside communities that to exchange knowledge for instance they go on this forms like turgor Harbaugh enter crowd took a nation and they go about reporting shady employers on the platform it's even a platform from governments and algorithms and to the disadvantage of cropped workers workers attempt to make the best out of it but the
question is is this really how labor relations should look like in the digital economy and i it seems like those alter communities as useful as started do a lot of things that the platform should do in the 1st place so this was the starting point for our research and we were intrigued whether all platforms organized labor relations
like you go or mechanical turk they took this stance is dead platforms and anxious marketplaces platforms are employers so that's brings a cell research questions we wanted better and how to platforms voluntarily participation instruments for crowd workers that he is that
worker participation influences the way how work is organized and I think we need to define what do we mean by worker participation but by participation be mean that the platform voluntarily puts in place instruments to enable workers to raise still voice to increase their autonomy to
improved a working condition or to influence of platforms decision making in this line of thinking it's it's really an employer does that voluntarily and literature on worker of participation offline context shows that increase worker participation is associated with of improved efficiency improve productivity and also results in a burqa but the record of climate and the question is why do employers to death of 1 reason could be I as an employer I care about creating a better workplace and of course another reason could be workers or employers just simply wanna reap the functional benefits associated with participation I want to highlight that this voluntarily worker participation is different from the Union based systems organizing a labor relations about unions because if you organizes the Union in general you you have certain legal legally binding rights any of instruments at your disposal to formally influence the decision-making off of an organization but in our study we really focus on voluntarily implementing instruments for work participation we examined 6 crowdsourcing platforms in that that are located in Germany just briefly to explain and the first one is you will WilTel which is a platform for innovation sophisticated designs for corporations come in touch with the scientists content as a platform for clients who seek counted for blocks of online shops and they're connected with a crowd of writers the sign allows lesson is basically a digital marketplace for creative design based on the contest model I clicker grades more like mechanical turk of at chopper is applied for lumber clients and basically the crowd on a scavenger hunt in the physical world for marketing reasons and test for its final is a platform for the crowds true tonight's as products on behalf of a client so how did the conducted this research so for 1 we conducted participant observation so we locked on the platforms we actually did the tasks the platform from asked us to do and for another remake document analyzes we looked at things like an FAQ not official documents out in our study we identified
2 critical dimensions for organizing our participation in in the 1st dimension is the participation modes by participation mode we need to look at how does the platform's interface infrastructure is enabling workers to participate the 2nd dimension participation content is really about and what areas workers can actually participate and I wanna start with the participation modem move few so different
for most of the identified the 1st and most of the basic more than the relates what leaders it before is informing informing is does a platform for wide transparent information about what is going on and that 8 scrawled workers in a decision better and how to work which in turn increases the crowd workers an example here is from the
from contents of they as you can see here without going into detail the provide a
detailed list how you much you were in for what and also provides you can see that here a tool that enables user crofter occur to see if I spend so much time and if a right that fast how much I with approximately and I'm not saying this is this of H calculation tool is perfect but I think this is in stark difference to other platforms for example composed platforms such as the 19 signs or the example sign lesson that I mentioned before because an accomplice model
of a lot of people submit their designs and only 1 or a few women in the science so a lot of people don't bother get paid and these platforms have tons of data available but they give workers more information about the actual meaning chance but given the data they have it would be rather easy to provide a tool that gives work a realistic assessment after winning chances on such a platform the 2nd mode is reporting
reporting the incident on a station platform opens up an individual channel for crawl to occur to harness the feedback from a crowd worker ordered the crowd worker can initiate a raise an issue on the old examples here is a lot of platforms you observed a have a contact form on some platforms have the opportunity to rate your employer so that's an instrument to of the doubts shady of employers and clients and some platforms more or less regular and issue emerged survey community members and that you have the ratings and service is that of course to be pooled those judgments from the crowd workers and in our research we tested the context forms of and the platforms actually did enter the did vary in their quality but in contrast to work as you mentioned the actually got pretty clearly answer for in humans and again this is really different from we will in the way you talk to machine and here a contact form depending on how much they really react to response at least that's the human response the 3rd mode is dialoguing platform engages in a publicly accessible conversation with the crowd either by pork they flee turning to the crowd and asking for feedback or crowd workers bringing up issues on their own what instruments to facilitate dialog downloading is enabled through forums or discussion boards and here's an example of the platform toward bitch unter recently mostly use the contest model of 4 it's the sign projects and these contests a huge part of the prize money was distributed through community would into the committee itself could decide who are in the Communion who when above 2 but this participants should receive prizes and to improved algorithm are and how the price of distributed all and engage in a dialog with its community and actually used the input from the community to improved algorithms the 4th motel atomic how we
can organize worker participation is including by including we mean that a platform asks users for instance through was through a vote of Interpol to include crowd workers in actual decision making so in contrast to the outer participation modes boating implies some form of accountability that means that the platform puts in place in the course of action that the majority of the crowd decides upon and here's an example from the pet from the Simon Larson and the use of voting to determine what the signer word meaning the sign of the month and the vendor receives a small price and I think you already see like if you think about this form of inclusion you get the sense this is more about the community engagement tool and not really about participation and that example to lose demonstrates if you think of participation we not only need to think how it happens but also in what areas those participation instruments are used and that brings me to the
next of dementia participation participation content the 1st dimension encompasses the workers can use participation tool to improved over conditions the vendor set up after platform an example for this is the platform providing transparent information about the nature of work and how it's organized or enabling crawled workers to report issues such as haters of bark orders missing payment and we gonna reacted the 2nd dimension is of about participating in how work is actually organized which means crowd workers participate in changing the platform set up in which direct takes place and in an example from the pet from content on this platforms employes rate but the quality of the work of to cry out and that of course impacts the amount of 2 payments and workers complained about the system as a contone server to crowd whether the evolution system is appropriate and discussed with the crowd but it's necessary to improved assistant knows example from before from your will do I showed you is an example of how dialog could be used to change to set workers participate on how a reward to distribute the 3rd dimension the most radical dimension was most substantial dimension is a is better platforms enable workers to shape the Walt's strategic direction of to form so what path what business fault for model firm deploys of course has an impact on how workers organize and how the people get paid and to be frank in our study we did find no for workers participate in this kind of dimension and only example we could think of at the moment of is the platform experiments they more of which is a stand for platform which is also platform for microtasks and on this platform a team of workers employers and a researcher decides upon the old wall direction of this platform so if we make an assessment combining those 2 dimensions the concludes that actually worker participation matters on on the platform that the investigated but if you look at more
closely if we think about the position modes we find that informing is kind of OK are reporting tools I use quite strongly overflow personally I would like to see more platforms having tools for the crowd workers evaluate 2 clients order employers some platforms use dialoguing and including basically hardly matters in terms of content most of our work a participation Our or cursed within the platform set up some in some rare instances platforms also discussed with the crowd how the changed all platforms and up and hold of workers organized and a sort dimension impacting the direction this non existent and again think about of course like if you have a forum for dialog being or reporting of course you could as a crowd members say I'm going to use that to change the set up or bring up the issues of direction but impression is when we observed as platform that this is not the case the could be several reasons for that year called workers are not willing to speak up or there's simply no interest and that's of course an issue for for more research so that make brief he concludes that in contrast to marketplaces such as Enter View but worker participation plays a role as in the case of Germany-based crowdsourcing platforms platforms use several tools but all wall concentrate on issues how to better organize work within the platform set up by the platform so I think there's still
much work to do and certainly also privately owned platform from would think about could be electron worker representatives or you know should we think about couldn't unionized workers but I think it's also worth remembering that the limits of participation or Kurd due to the governance and ownership structure of 2 platforms if platforms of privately owned and they have Venture Capital the venture
capitalists before supplied from the sky is strictly possible so that least not sufficient resources to think about our work a participation and I think those limit show that again if we think about the work of Traver Foltz and also session later on today so from the hands better stiffed we need to think more about common based models and cooperatives us alternatives and a thing that means that and I concur with of Europe that if we have more worker participation privately owned platforms more unionization and common based alternatives and more competition among the platforms that could actually be that the future is going to be brighter than the expected thank you then
so we have a few minutes for discussion in Kewanee with you you don't really see you but that's what we will do our best maybe I'll start with a question have for you Thomas and I know I'm going to do a very risky thing because I'm asking a question that I'm not sure I can answer myself about my own research but
maybe maybe you have a better answer and this is 1st how sincere like you've been researching participation how sincere the using these participation I schemes this participation attempts by these companies are all in other words do these do you think they are like a cover to actually allow continue using workers and paying them last by making them feel they're more involved because we know that when people are involved they're willing to do a lot of stuff for a little money that's volunteering works right so I was just wondering about that I mean the noted from
human relations school let people think about the workplace and if you look in what that the few better I think it varies I think some platforms we each have a culture or a grounded in the work process on the creative community I think they're more inclined to care about these issues because they're of you know getting a different kind of crowd out if you have something like as mechanical turk click worker it this issue might just not matter as much but I think what you showed before like this idea of switching between different platforms because if we have more competition between the platforms at least if they don't really care about creating a better workplace they might just forced to care about participation because they competing all were other workers and I think will example look it's pressure and
suddenly they start to change and I think that might be part of the solution I have a question them I've been along the conference about crowding cloud working from the big German union last week that human talent and that was quite interesting to see what of course it was about a political union framework of cloud and trough working but according to your subject the idea was canon algorithm Reapers and other well then they represent now so how can we can be put other values all the work wait a ways of working into the algorithm so the algorithm can help us to have a common new common crowned and knowledge of let's say in algorithm so so let's take maybe the notion of transparency because I know a
lot of your involved in transparency related activism other answer suppose to be more ideal much were that are fully ideal to the notion of transparency right because when it's not when there's rules on those and other with them when there's as stated language that says exactly how things work it wasn't supposed to be the relatively easy to make it transparent no of course that many if there's a business on the other side that makes a very non-transparent very strategic very competitive and on the other hand we have and I think Dana discussed this this morning with the keynote we have a I and we have of with that or formed in an companies they don't know exactly what's going on beyond the algorithm because there's some some attentiveness to at some some complex statistics but when we speak about values I with I think and i've you know I I studied my computer science ago almost over 20 years ago IT member that's being active in that field and you know as a as an activist flesh young computer scientist I was the reality of the possibility that I have everything documented everything is slated somewhere so I think those values the value of transpose is 1 example you know what another value of state really quickly it is egalitarian or equalists right the system is supposed to be egalitarian to be equal in open to everyone everyone has a voice everybody is everyone is mediated via an ever torso so so people can also make up their own identity and I think it's some of these platforms you worst not being fully identified so it's also a place of freedom supposedly of place of
tennis but then we see in reality it's not always the case some things these biases come back to haunt us from various conditions but I still think I with science could also be ideal in those sentences they would be design right and to add to that I think the important thing about algorithm is there are always confused values and ideas and decisions are infused into algorithms so what I like to see on those crowdsourcing
platforms or proper working or whatever you wanna call them for sharing economy platforms is that they make assumptions transparent on what's the basic ideals of behind assault riffles because you can't expect that as soon as this transparent a people's gonna interpret the information correctly but the should be all about what are the basic working assumptions and explain the plane F-Secure language how you actually how work assigned and they should make this available is a book that really nice booklet almost like a short book by Douglas
Loskov the media theories quote code'll be coded and it's a really nice sort of manifesto about this about the fact that we do need to be a more you know in terms of literacy so we need to all and herself around could be more comfortable with that concept in general in order to not be manipulated that much more questions the the brave 1st
question the 2nd question hello my name is Anya thank you for you both talks and I was wondering who were both focusing on situations where the platform actually serves as workers or provides workers to the platform chivalry you see it and would you think the same models are
transferable to situations where it's just users of a platform I mean the whole social media universe basically is comparable in a way because we provide not or the ability to work but other bits and pieces to the platform it's the generally
yes I think we see a similar experience to the 1 I opera trade and Facebook 1 you where you as a customer feel that you have nobody to talk to I don't know how many of you have a ever expense problems with Facebook your pages disappeared maybe content was censored and what can you do really they
don't really care about you they care about who pays them actual money and it's supposedly a smart efficient companies so the also don't have these fleet of proteins they can employ to answer every 1 of the BN customers questions right so I think also as as a customer consumer maybe porous alumina using users who generates whatever you like the quality also experience that that we feel like we are parts of Facebook I'll go with them in a way we part of the Baltic system that Facebook but have built to you know socially constructed or all the all in a way I think that's a good answer you know as a was
maybe 1 more anecdote about that but there is the subject of contents
modulation which is also very interested in and now Facebook which against strive to be this very efficient company suddenly employs and again I'm not sure if it's like it's not fully employs its contractors again content moderators by the thousands suddenly they realize that they are tasks that they need you mentioned eyes for and that they need a multitude of workers for them so full those content model tools again another subject another sort of thing employs by social media that being treated kind of similar to Wilbur drivers and and I think what I now elected after that it's
like we could maybe make type of features that as soon as platforms reach a critical threshold really gone really really big they run into problems
where peripheral management is just not sufficient and the need to put in place some human mechanisms to resolve issues here we
have a camera on the hubble you balance the do we have an idea how to balance the egalitarian way of the community finding the values which are put into the algorithm and the lawmaking which giving a clear framework placing you our platform you have to provide services social services to your workers we have 1 comma decimal 1 million clout workers in Germany unorganized individualized and then the other you balanced law between the law and thinking that area way of community finding I didn't do we need more law yeah I mean we certainly need more regulation the chill and I'm thinking and was marginals before no talks today that actually be could be at the forefront of
not just letting lose everyone but think about what a basic regulations every platform means but I just find fascinating knowledge bases is it's 3 out of like a new altered communities doing just a lot of works at the platforms do and and you don't which is still a great debt to do it but they could have regulations saying certain things like there should be a tool for a reporting shady employers because enforce regulations like that and it would help the people to
create better working conditions and I wanna make the case for us this participation but approach so before researching over my PhD was mostly about content sites have been looking at last the Afam which are almost you know western PCs the Afam if you know the music service that back then in the like a decade ago and new tube we have been looking at the participation of the way they encourage the dissipation over those platforms and I noticed that people who participate I tend to also value in terms of money in terms of economy the to websites more so try to make a case that community-based business models were community this report dissipation and I'm trying not to be too cynical here they're not as good ethically they're making good business but when I chose this as the top point of my my thesis my mind was about high sort of a heated adds an ad business models that I know a lot of other sessions you're talking about them because they say that know we all know how the exploits of there are and I
know that both dissipation could be also exploitive as we said for the suppression could lead to also forced you know we did some manipulation tricks this is also something that looks participatory but it is manipulative in but I still think that but that a we need to look at long you know long should be our fallback option we need to to really strive for more participatory porches but at the same time we need to make sure we at that we are educated enough with all this persuasion mechanism and participatory attempts and try to look at very you know state-level try to look at it like for the value that it is so we would not be manipulated in another way it's you know that this equation of the they're being manipulated all being without any privacy doesn't it's a server needs to be that way over model is also being you know take that the worse of 2 evils you are being tracked all the time in being manipulated in many ways and I feel the 1st step in order to overcome this is all wellness and you know being in sessions like this in the public eye is basically so that a good step for Hoare and just to add to that is there's actually researched at once of workers or the crowd
identifies with a certain brand or an employer at their their judgments about what's going on justified or not changes so if identify more I'm more willing to you you know give them apart from the benefit of the doubt or not care as much about the decision so there would be that there's definitely in this area from missions well is there all public questions answered I'm sure you will be here for maybe for
some more prior questions another 5 minutes on the side of the stage or at the dawn enough to say think you'll wanting to Thomas going inspiring talk I think this subject will continue being a something of the Republic of next year's and thank you for your inspiration thank you if we have

Fachgebiet Informatik
Abstract When humans imagined robots and computers in the workplace, they have envisioned them as servants and supporters of mankind. However, in recent years, many online platforms, such as Uber or Amazon Mechanical Turk, are “employing” myriads of human workers for tasks supervised, controlled and managed by algorithms. How does it feel like when your boss is an AI algorithm? How do human workers react when the algorithm maltreats them? And how can platforms enable workers in platform mediated-work to regain their voice and autonomy? In this session, Lior Zalmanson and Thomas Gegenhuber will share their insights from their recent academic studies and outline future directions for labor relations in platform-mediated work.
