so thank you hello everyone and super excited to be here today and my Manuel and Brazilian and my background in international development I actually chose this path because of always being passionate
about bringing together people from all over the world to use so off-peak global challenges and I think the challenge is not something that the alighting action on the country was still have a lot of them so those us book called we could problems or as you you
wrote the book on frugal innovation called a planet and problems without the without borders and I'll just mention a few even
though I know we already know many of them but this is a picture from my home country Brazil specifically from some power where you can definitely see the contrast between preaching work so in the worst part of it that inequality gap is widening and that's the data from Oxfam and while I show kicked out of the city and watching always that actually I will be 10 billion human beings in the planet very soon and 70 % event them leading indices we definitely do not yet have have the infrastructure for it especially now when we talk about water there's still 660 T median people have that lack access to water in the world
and pollution kills 7 million people every day and also 7 millions a number of
factors that are lost every year and most of it's due to animal agriculture that's data from failed and the consequences of that goes from C O two level increasing as firemen fertility lack of very diversity in so 1 is so take the rare woth
made graphic that maybe some of you already know that dude in on the planetary boundaries which as those that we were not expected to trust passed that on 4th at we're ready did in many of the topics and she added to that the social boundaries that are actually the part inside the we still
shortfall and so the idea is that the Donald area economy it's to show that trigger from 1 sign a crossing the ceiling an overshot in what we and for the planetary boundaries from 1 side and from the other lagging behind on what we should do for the social perspective so that's that's not so great
acceleration that you see those data from our future errors and you can see the carbon dioxide
increasing ocean acidification increasing world population increasing without infrastructure that emission before and so this part of my concern the other part is related to
technology and seen that an hour leaving the 4th in this revolution as the war the comic forum assess the biggest impact on society we are you might know the war's law that shows the increasing on competing capacity and al so we have the call from curves which shows that 4 of them by a technology that's also the case sodini sequence the reading and writing is also increasing super fast and the
same goes for a machine learning blockchain media that technologists so we see this changing and urea rating all how impactful and can be technology in our lights that raises to my of also some concerns that I'll share with you especially for of them so 1st and then you then consequences are we see with social media and so 1 a couple of scandals regarding
democracy regarding future bubbles and privacy it also
raises concerns regarding the future of work so how will alternation impact society especially developing countries such as mine and of this not to mention
did really bad use of technology for me carry or or other harmful purposes so the 2nd
challenge that are highlighted here as a lack of diversity I contributed to study with the think tank of German think-tank all better place slot looking for the digital gap exists in many countries it's huge
and the bad side of it is that not only on access and technology but also on creating them and I read this book from take you knew that maybe some of you already read as well as showing the bias is their hidden into the algorithms and when you have only a certain type of population creating those algorithms definitely super harmful for society so we do have people working on that that's a picture for my friend from Brazil working and integrate more women into tech but you know that it's still like they're far below what you should be doing in this
topic that that concern is supply chain that's a picture that to meet super shocking I how will you feel about it but from 1 side
we see how technologies being created and especially from the mining process and most of our cell phones have confidence that come from very bad mining initiatives is especially in COBOL for instance called time is a supreme court and a minor refer on 4 hour of forms and on the other side how is being dismantled and disposed off so we see that is a huge issue to be tackled so in this field and the last 1 will be hyper centralization this graphic and think talks
by itself at the 5 big plays on techno days has a market cap which is bigger than many did a piece of nations and on top of that is the
gigantic funds now being raised for cuisine and dominating the huge part of the market
so you might call me a dreamer but I think I'm not the only 1 especially being here in this event were so so many people working to change this perspective and
changed the scenario and 1 of feels that its still possible to use 1 acceleration to tackle the other and really do
something good with technology because the impact that it has its its massive and especially because now I mean since 2015 we already have a sort of a
roadmap or a framework that we can use to tackle the global problems so those of the Sustainable Development Goals that the UN agreed on in 2015
and and knowing that and so trying to do something in this field I kept on working and trying to get more information on this potential merger stack in impact in 1 of the the things that I did together with an organization called we shall faced in France and in many other countries nowadays in the world and the open state which is a German organization we did our protocol pop 21 at of as opposed to COP 21 which was a conference of Parties and there you know the 1 that led to the climate
agreement so we did this proof of concept that 1st part is far that was the 12 projects accelerated in the castle so we brought together people from all over the world and I give them access
to make a space in order for them to provide solutions like of solar generator water future and many others showing that you can have a bottom-up approach that is more the centralized that is also more effective from sometimes ends that use stacked to tackle big problems and to make
it go further and try to also give more visibility to this in shield in Brazil I support and the organization of call Buttermaker which is 1 of the big events that happen singing in Latin America regarding social and digital innovation and
finally in the thing that are now working on and that's like where 1 to focus my presentation from our 1 is good tech collapse so that's a new project and it's a venture that's mainly working on 2 key questions 1st how can technology help us solve some of the world's biggest challenges
and 2nd how is the support and it was system for people working with like any impact structure to date where the opportunities and the challenges in there so we know that it is sold currently that's a research initiative we and secured some funding
was a couple of partners to travel all over the globe and interview our goal is to have 300 introduced by the end of the of the research which should be by September I've already
been so Latin America Europe of couple of times just coming out for major our colleague has been to Africa as well so the idea is Street had a global scope
and what the 2 days to share some of the findings I've obviously not have time to share everything that I had the chance to learn for the past but I think Kennedy's a spark a bit of her curiosity and invited to go read the report it to the publisher by September without them end
maybe it's just hot I guess 1 of the big 1 of the idea that came to me were how many many people already working in this field of stacking impact and how many examples I could give a guess here the Republican you already saw field are just concentrating 4 sectors today 1st within every culture and on attacked see a lot of example especially Brazil in Latin America as the more modern many others working with that and to create to reduce water in the in the feed the planting fields and so 1 I'll give you the example of this MIT Project which is this machine learning to have produced no urban farming and also is still sometimes controversy 3 controversial topic as the use a technologies to create new types of retain that's because you know how bad it is the way that you're consuming to to date and fish and so forth and there are many startups trying to tackle this problem using either a plant based in technology or totally synthetic synthetic products here give some examples here this would for a fiche also diary products without milk I mean I haven't got a couple of other good examples I can share with you later on and show the
2nd I field is like the production and materials the fashion industry really sometimes think much about it but it's super polluting and I have here also a couple of examples startups tackling that so modern needle both threads which is working on roads see OK made all from spider which is actually more sustainable and resistant and which is a French top that produces dying from a bacteria dying industry fashions supra polluting
again so that's a big issue to tackle new materials that can be event has a case makers reduce the use of plastic so by a soloist biodegradable materials use you have the example or who for
instance we can't which can you provide some alternatives for water bottles climate and
biodiversity to get to the 3rd topic and then you
have the example of guy carbon Engineering as states the goal of planting 1 billion he's at a time and with that help a lot and refers station and finally health care and
well-being I have here a couple of examples that no mention 2 of them there from India where I was just before coming to Republic when his Psaty pads those are pads made out of banana fiber so much more sustainable and even for the production of them theory using the women force you know to to make it happen and also the I best exam which does drastic sum for cancer which is is very painful for women in a much faster and less painful and easier way to go to rule whereas in India for instance so I mean there are many people doing amazing work using tax for
impact but he talking with them and researching a bit on the field we realize 2 main things the first one is that still we need more role models on that market is studies more examples in 1 of the
key issues in another 4 that's how is to be able to measure the actual impact that those companies are having and that's still a very hard thing to do in every sector but when you're talking about innovation it might be even harder and the 2nd thing is that for them to
grow and they need a lot of talent and that's something that is still missing from 1 side because any technical we lack technical and talented people in in general right so also like supporting more people to go to steam area as have more people getting trained in coding programming and so far but there's some only act you know we also needs for the technical people to have the
social capacity of understanding what the problems are and how can they use their skills to read it to solve real problems to not go just for techno push that's really to think about problem pool of the solutions so that's the 2nd big challenge that we face in a novel now for the supports a consistent that's the 2nd thing that we've been researchers so the 1st talk and action
provide solutions for a big global out as a 2nd as how is it that the system structure what is still lacking in there so interviewed more than 200 players from a from the impact factor in money but sector to understand what is happening out there so investors accelerators incubators some
corporates and we realize that you can have supports for years tied up where companies working with impact all along the way so maybe before even your company's parts you can make it happen did it with venture beating programs you can then go to seed accelerator that will support you with mentorship sometimes funding white into gross programs when you your have a big
company that went to scale to tackle began people have been imposed and then you can choose to support another of her vertical as well so to get to support more customized for you regarding the technology that you're using here have some examples of that science ventures was
obviously focus in science but also on industries rock start for instance they have programs of food programs of energy so depends of bit and what's the sector that you're looking at and even if you prefer not to have the traditional company for my new fathers for Ngô their accelerators working on that I just spoke recently also in India
play is 1 that supports the induced a ends with all the different types of value than
that as tied up can get into those programs the network services this the result is a very interesting example of an accelerator that actually
provides and the company with a design thinking program that can help and talk directly with the beneficiaries and to focus your community in order to validate their solutions with the beneficiaries instead of just taking it out of the mind and validating the mother before going to the market begin have partnerships so that was more that is for the for the accelerator incubation
pot the other important part to support that usually accompany needs is investment and we see that the traditional way the investment sector the structure nowadays we can say it is problematic right so some people start trying to you now promotes more the zebra model for a company instead of the Unicorn in Ukraine is the 1 that you need to grow to achieve billion people a billion dollars while it usually looking much more to the valuation then to the real revenue growth in consumer growth so there are models that might
support that better especially for companies working for impact and to be honest maybe some companies that are working in innovative sectors that will create impact for society sometimes need to stop at different types of capital for instance having the grants from foundations were participating and challenges that's what it's called usually the pioneer gap so to overcome that you can get different types of funding and now they the meaning types of funding there available in that in between and somewhat additional
ones they're taking also their model in order to adapt and provides the solutions there the investment that is needed for for companies so village captive is intriguing amid the model on the selection process in order to be more diverse and their portfolio of innovation funds also those different types of investment box capital put the carried interest condition to the to
the impact that the company half so they wanna get an extra benefit if their companies that they are investing on you create impact so they received many not adaptations and innovations
in the investment model that are also supporting this trend effect and impact but still having all that can we really connect that the system right a soul brother so many people all over the world working and acceleration inclination investment how do we connect so that that's still a big question an open 1 and the 2nd question that states and that would be my big learning is how well is how can we create still new tools to support investment on companies really working to create impact so and the idea of John with Niklaus is to tackle those issues that I mentioned in fact management for innovation tackle this short as of technical challenge connected international assistance and eventually provide new investment tools that will probably be the my next time here in Republican telling you what the delta comes of it and so then invited to take a look into the Polish it in September our reports and
then you find this and in between a be super have sustained penchant to reply to questions if you have some thank you

Abstract How can technology acceleration be harnessed to tackle wicked problems, such as climate change, rapid urbanization, or feeding 10 billion people while regenerating natural ecosystems? This question is at the foundation of Good Tech Lab, which explores the frontiers of technology, entrepreneurship and finance, where pioneers tackle the world's biggest problems. In this talk, we will share some insights of our research on "impact tech" entrepreneurship, as well as the opportunities and challenges this movement is facing.
