We're talking about data sharing infrastructure for health and medical research data and the use of any human-derived research data carries some legal and ethical responsibilities, ensuring that this information is not disclosed to non-authorised individuals. And that could be either intentionally by hacking or inadvertently by people
accidentally providing access to someone and perhaps not provoking that. So, researchers when undertaking this have a responsibility to keep this information safe but also do data custodians of particular data sets as well as data infrastructure providers. So med.data.edu.au or med.data for short is a nationally funded cloud-based data storage
system. We like to think of it as a secure container that's also linked to high performance compute resources for health and medical data. It's available for use by any Australian researchers.
Our primary focus is on probably large data sets, so this is one terabyte and larger or going to grow to that amount. Currently we have six petabytes of data stored that's equivalent to about eight million CDs and that's primarily de-identified prior to storage. However, de-identified data can also be stored on med.data.edu.au and if that's the case we'd
love to hear from you to discuss the use requirements of such data which does affect the storage customisation. So that's how is the data intended to be used, when and where and by who. We have some contact details on our website and we would love to hear from you.
