Open data/open science is currently a hot topic. Astronomy has been at the forefront for the sharing of data. Françoise Genova explains how astronomical data resources have been networked and then integrated globally through the astronomical Virtual Observatory (VO). The VO aims at enabling seamless access to the wealth of available on-line resources through a framework of interoperability standards and of interoperable tools. The International Virtual Observatory Alliance was set up in 2002 to coordinate VO activities world-wide and to manage the standardisation process. This will be of interest to: -- data creators & managers as there are lessons learned from the Astronomy experience -- Librarians Data is available and used by the community in its daily research work. Lessons learnt in building the astronomical data infrastructure are contributed to the Research Data Alliance (RDA). Françoise Genova has extensive experience in managing astronomical data: -- director of the Strasbourg astronomical data centre CDS (1995 to 2015) -- one of the founding parents of the astronomical Virtual Observatory project -- coordinator of several European projects dealing with the European Virtual Observatory -- member of the High Level Expert Group on Scientific Data (European Commission) -- one author of "Riding the wave" report (2010) and of its follow-up "Data Harvest" -- member of WDS Scientific Committee (2009-2012) and CODATA Executive Committee (2010-2012). She currently leads the "Data Access, Discovery and Interoperability" Work Package of the European ASTERICS astronomy Cluster, which aims at optimizing the usage of the data from the astronomical large projects through the Virtual Observatory. She is an active member of the RDA, in particular as member of the RDA Technical Advisory Board, and of the RDA Europe projects. She will be a member of the Data Seal of Approval Board starting 1 January 2016. |
