Abstract Ember is "the framework for building ambitious applications." But what happens when that ambition leaves some users behind? For many in the enterprise environment, accessibility is a legal requirement. For anyone building a new app elsewhere, the user data speaks for itself: nearly 10% of all users have some sort of a disability. So how can we make this easier? What already exists? Not only will we discuss how Ember supports this, we'll look at some imaging techniques being used in scientific research that may help us look at this challenge from a different angle.

and due to the fact the this
then to that in the fact that have
it could you can do and so I fall
over they do pick me up and with I don't want them you today to tell you a story and I wanted to make accessibility really personal I wanted to walking through experience and so I sat on writing and I couldn't no 1 in my family is differently abled that's not why I care about accessibility so I couldn't write that story because it wasn't my story was wasn't real to me so I mean it's a my story why I care about accessibility and hopefully we will all find something to relate to I care
about accessibility because the 2 it's my job I work for Javier morning chase where we use to build accessible applications big giant ones I worked on the U I and on where I provide accessible components those going to engines that goes into a huge act it's huge we have a federal requirement to provide accessible products and when I joined the team we don't really have anybody who could help us figure out however take these specs and translate them into number reality so I learned I also care about
accessibility because they cannot web standard this dual will be 22 years incest 1st started programming and over the last 22 years I have come to love and deeply appreciate that Web standards inspects exist they help me architect better solutions because I know how things are supposed to her suppose you write theory but still it's very helpful to know that and FIL should there's also an
accessibility is back and before it had says during known as W. A. I. R. E. M which stands for web accessibility initiative for accessible rich feature applications and because there's quite a few of these we're going to quickly review
some of the ones that you might commonly here
so I just went accessibility it's making a website so your applications usable by people of all different types of abilities and it really seeks to answer the question can users of all ability levels use my application in a way it was designed to be used so not that weird stuff you're Q 18 does words like 99 and then blue and then could use is like that nobody of on another common term
is web content accessibility guidelines for work which had which
is on version 2 comma decimal 0 others 3 levels in we can't we have which is the base level the kind the easiest 1 here we had double if you are required by law to make accessible products this is probably the level that you have to meet and the struggle a which encompasses both gained and extend that and that gets even deeper and is more complex the Americans
with Disabilities Act is often referred to as the 88 and countries like the UK Portugal Canada Australia and they also have similar laws so wherever your programming for check for that and if you follow me on Twitter you'll see this fashion lot the and why if you took the word accessibility and you count to the letters between why there's 11 of them and a 11 wife It's also great because you get more characters on twitter if you shorten hash just a problem not anymore but what
I I care about accessibility because the future is cool and the future is now this is the fine late as a kid I was so much like all I wish superior whose existed inamorata but all I gotta so if you lose so awesome so thanks so the futures helmet when living in the future right of medicine in credible accessibility technology and progress so let's look at some of them we
are giving people back the ability to see colors his glasses you get you put them on and they allow you to see color they allow color blind people to see color there's 300 million people in the world to have some form of color point like crazy and I thought something was interesting about the use of digital color blind people are often surprised to find out kit butter is not right eye so that was really where I would not be drinking apparently you know it we are also giving
people the ability to here couldn't here but doctors at UNC School of Medicine in Chapel Hill performed in auditory brand sorry this our auditory brain standard implant surgery this is a picture of this little boy who had the search theory and he was able to hear his father's voice and the that moment the 1st time I heard his father's voice Microsoft's big business
even no sorry yeah yeah of and has developed has here with called Video Indexer does the cepheid expected provides transcriptions it provides real-time translations they can even analyze the sentiment of our how the speaker was feeling based on their expression switch OK and then you can use it to adjust the language model so this would be call for accessibility because you could make a language model simpler you could translated to target a different body which means 1 talk of the more you can reach more people with 1 time variable and even down to simpler things but included
is a project started by a student at Stanford His father was blind he had the story and he is starting this project to try to adult text images on the Internet in an easier way so people out there trying to solve these problems and into a creek will job this is more stuff to here right so but I all these things are
in what we have to I start asking myself this some announced on you this will you create maybe monogamy glasses so maybe there's some stuff we can do a number thing that's cool when I see these advances in technology I am I feel empowered to be curious to think about what's possible and that is so exciting to me even in our own
community there is innovation on how we provide accessible solutions we now have an accessibility of Zoey and Thompson were yes FIL that's exciting the thank you and me and winning over accessibility income earned chamber atoms and just before we do that I think I want us to address to think about to face to acknowledge some of the reasons why accessibility is part accessibility is
emotion and we can't really do anything about it until willing to face it's
emotional for our users who were trying to just perform the tasks for their daily life out there trying to buy presents for their families they're trying to use all really cool news service that we forgot to make accessible were losing money because were not included and they feel
frustrated if the isolated and why don't they care and I can shop at some places but not others so I know it's possible and it can just feel really overwhelming and dancing and with having you fill in some exclude you feeling for grant accessibility is also
mentioned for developers project managers were like I needed is yesterday and you like OK but no and they're like yeah right and then you have it seen leave you cite all District Calif accelerator union OK but wind later ever come right never for killing out and discover this question up there in the job of about it putting this question up there what if were failing our users when we were not the technical experts they hired as to be when we don't take ownership and we don't do that little bit pushed back hey we gonna do this is going to take a little bit longer whatever failing it up what if we could be detectable experts we were hard to be how cool would that be comparing with the but it's very important and promised I tried it it works we also have a
saying only I need to be an interrupt for your work I need proved to everyone I'm severely terms did they come from and if you want and if you don't then you know
this will probably happen public crashed learned and that burn out and I'd like love to save you from that and but when you think about other things and how national accessibility really is I can totally get why it's easy to ignore I completely happened that the that and I understand accessibility is
also part because it can be difficult to get karakter your 1st starting out I had to read that accessibility spec 4 times before even understand the words they read of what that which is not mean when I think it means any like I had to go through this process of reading and trying to reading attract lands within OK so we're getting farther IT support it's OK and so
now with the collapse of the hard comes in and the of I want to have from how say challenges will put it like that 1 of the things we love about and is right now to little from within that maybe we can brainstorm on of rock transitions so when you click on a link in a tasty and that you know just a little tiny outlet right there and a screen reader doesn't recognize that something new has been added so will just be quiet and silent so if you put the league link and then Knuth have some parliament add-ons that kind of try to help solve this problem that in 1 year I wonder if it's all this a number itself some union out on maybe maybe not totally OK the way just something to think about models models are pretty hard 18 Member work single major applications or in the world in general just pop up straight try to use them maybe that would be nice and women love maybe he tried to not use puppets right there's ways to make them accessible but the figure out a way universally they're gonna probably there so can we track the focus please the focus needs to stay in the model and not go outside modal when it's there is to be there and tell summoned pushes escape of closes later click the submit button or something it you should be able to get to the other stuff behind and that's a really terrible experience for a summit assistive technology which OK assistive technology h understand quite T from now on it during the stock because of the set of technologies really hard to say like product and fast right so things to them with actually support and so there's a specific set of rules for working should have label or are described by orally by and there's they on specific elements in specific contexts and it's really nice rule set in that can tend to be difficult but all set and where engineers we like rules right to write rules for things I wonder forgetting about how probably maybe I'll just think about it and It's also lost also that you being added an action anything it's also nothin for accessible because where are you can do with the click you also need to build you a keyboard and there's some rules about what enter a space or Enter and or those kinds of things that we have to think about that but you can put interactive elements inside other interactive elements at the big you know so you really need to make that giant outside in clickable we could maybe think about this and again vision for a fast rules well there is this Come perspective they have a lot of they have a lot of leeway for you guys switch and this is not really an member thing but they should really draw brilliantly bonus transaction on with this but there and you ever tried to use AT and of password put your path out all of the you and what happens it readout star star star star star star star OK that's the related to that that doesn't tell me anything meaningful up if I'm not looking at the screen and distant stars are old what if I didn't type that capital Pi correctly or that talent hash with everything that's and it may be that the bigger assigned passwords in general or broken we really need to come up with a way that we keep the batteries out and let asking and it may be that whatever that is is in working so there but what I'm trying to say is not how to do it but this is a problem let's think bigger
so what word sorry not sorry there are some
easier things some super in this story so I don't worry exactly I'm not trying I'm not severe and I'm not say something cheesy like there's a superhero and all of you were there to hear it now that
this superhero on the stories Web standards the the 20 years ago so I see the cycle they see these things that were the old and new again and I said the 1st 5 years of my career taking out online sales now yard tell me about makin' and I have you lost your minds not really them there are some of
the some easy things easy and and airport easy its relative right I think the easy though and I think over time you may agree with me and you semantic HTML use should views HMO values each of us any time you go out of reach for a did when there's is meant to gage now you this like this look this is my mommy look fix yourself before I have to fix you is what I would says I hope you think of that as we reach for that day and set of each 1 I should be doing this I understand there's a new 1 and some of you will come up after me or come up to me after this just in my being pedantic or a maybe new wants to ask yourself that question 1st please you know I got to the links classes about linking that's around he is but if it is a bad thing like close there's some some their toggle something some people will care if it looks like a linker looks like a but not I can tell you please as step 1 it around feral user link you think a little abundantly have to the designs a yelling at you have rules for this wing forces but please do that 1st you can give it that link the class abundantly absolutely most well maybe not OK all understand I'm saying this is the 1st level keyboard navigation interested right now if you must your key word has to be able to do so they should be singing back-and-forth anything you can do I can do better I can do anything better than being in a 2nd and that selling active navigation please up down arrows they work quite well and don't have I must say that because the argument intensity the efficiency and and there are keyboard shortcuts already innocent assistant I don't eat he made cooking there are keyboard shortcuts are ready and AT and this list you can find online that will tell you that those like usually really enthusiastic people I know I tried a few times W all just make its own that button appears to be a guess what the cheerleader about 4 years so Dole had those just use the extra error navigation AccuColor contrast to use I believe this is in Chrome DevTools now in modern I work on Windows and you kind of you know in the dark regions along that a were were few verses behind from but I think this is a current problem right you can check for a contrast things there's also like a thousand was there and like build anything you just Google so are easy 1 to fix and talk to me later if you think your designers will get because I have some advice and and add all texts to your images 1 is relevant this is another easy place and let's let's look at this 1 and maybe a images just for
show maybe a image you put it in a like that article or something is breaking up this giant wall text you're doing at Clarion you wanna talk about how how moles also from little kids and adults heating in whatever and so in those instances you would leave the Altai it still needs to be there it there please by NEC blight and you can add the role presentation or if you're
shopping and you need to have a description because actually knowing what will it is a looks like something is very important to which when you back young to say motorway there you can look at this of fuzzy red stuffed with around 1 change in round eyes on top of that is actually sounds kind of freaky if you I really worked on a centralizing economy 1 will it just came out kind of scary every time so that you know nephews happen when you really work sounds terrible and despite these easing
wins being relatively easy to find a do and you could pick up some gains still fight as developers and engineers in I'm not here to tell you to stop fighting actually we have quite likely is right I mean you're likely to devolve inspiring and to me this I kind of like OK here and if you want
to know chair I just said in the editor and not just run don't make me think about the use of a skylight that inverse Superman fight like I knew they were super heroes in using the apparatus the OS embedding namely here which 1 1 so I care about accessibility summer contains 2 not high give something different to fight about you know
and how about your positional a development instead of the need of semantic it should not only in that's effective and you can add a rule you cannot add the level and you could use this to that this is going of this is
what happens if you use an H 1 no so if you like the tenants versus spaces fight maybe have a slight instead which 1 is easier which was really thought thought about that
1 in this is in my opinion a more at that fight kind of like the black panther will Jaguar mean wow but I preferred this kind of sites so if you have to fight of course maybe war wanted to be like for versus whole-core they're still friends at the end kind of fight that and maybe that better I
know of this is all exploiting your brain take up that's and in some of your essay well everybody's stairs in this modern web and it's not going anywhere soon you to adjust OK so it then come up with another solution that solves the problem I don't mind but the solution is I just like there's not a solution and I think maybe that's what we're getting a little stop well we just that's just the way this book is does it mean to be that way are we asking ourselves that question with really an open mind on how we could solve this in multiple ways the venerable love about this fact is you could you could make and AST dot net Fain accessible just by using the success criterion techniques in the stock party they're giving you like way a huge backwards compatibility they also give it to you in a really great modern way to you have to find where that is but It's also is possible it's where you can do it we can do it I know listen this is those of the vector that
and in true Amber fashion there's an add-on for that there's not quite enough talents without those so I'm not here to do the typical ever talk words private hominids the all tracing talked about so again we have some time these ones are exist
so if you go much in the number 11 why again have repelled you will find some really cool stuff on 1 of my newest favorite add-ons is september component attributes definitely check that 1 out it just it gave me so many accessibility was because I don't have to change my existing components I would say that again because like you and the children I did not to change my existing components it just let me add each not attributes to them which kernel that sort of thing and so so if you have an offer contributor is something that like you to try to keep in mind and maybe make criteria for your and on if you want 2 or 3 or 4 so that that she were navigation focus management but like for models traffic of this there's also a difference between visible focus and screen reader focus which is super fun to try to explain so that we do that today but I'm willing to help you later if you want the binding and getting the right areas for in there and the right it's meant occasional old theory of renders ventilation and my last him is remember you're not alone you might not know how to do this yes well please don't pretend that you you don't have to pretend you don't have to feel bad about it you just don't know how to do it yet just like all the other things we have learned over the years I didn't know it then I learned it I've learned to recognize I just don't know it yet so remind yourselves you're not alone this is not just your responsibility you can make accessible and the atoms and applications and when you get stuck just ask I still have to ask we have channel for accessibility where you can ask and if you don't know the answer to finally and will figure it out together it will be fine so whether you
figured out through happens be magnanimous this is my word for 2018 it's going to be magnanimous or permit because the world is just who right now but it's magnanimous because were gracious were giving were generous a list of little bit of you know currently Cocke man you know just itself is a model and I know I know a so let's be magnanimous was it's ambitious to be magnanimous I think
so what is this solutions for the heart problems for an EMBA by default what if we became the 1st task a framework to truly be like you know we got this he all I would be solved another really hard problem all the jobs requirements face 1st because were amber and that because these elusive also those solutions that are community needs not more build tools we need accessible solutions so they're
not that's called action it today and this great from Jeddah and she says if you wanna show what did you have to be big and love it which is is free of think it and that's how I think about Emperor ever shows up in dozen dishes they and this is really the crux of my story is I got involved the Future of my story is that house stay involves an out many new to get involved we can do that you can find me is no some there on
slack or Melanie or some there on Twitter and if you're ever in Chicago we got to see you thank you the
this fact to that end this is this
fact in fact due to the fact that who do and
the the the the the the you don't get back in
