pretty accessible on I went to art school I don't have any training in engineering or anything like this so the best thing I can possibly do when in 1 experiment with technology is go to the garbage go to the dumpster and pull out called here that is there are no longer useful to anybody else and I can take it into my studio and I can take it apart and see what it provides me with as far as artistic inspiration so I never really start out with a concept an artistic concept I more look at the machine and I say OK machine what can you tell me what that's interesting to work with and so I think a lot of us in the audience in here uh at the Congress are familiar with this concept of planned obsolescence and I do like to introduce it however because in sometimes when I talk about of my students and I get asked if I believe in the conspiracy theory of planned obsolescence and I would like to point out as probably many of you know that this was no conspiracy theory to business model of that started when in the Great Depression in USA this was 1 way to get out of a big economic jam was to produce products and that have a limited life span so that people would buy things again and again and again and we really haven't stopped doing that which is causing us a lot of problems in because we keep having this approach the and so what I'm gonna do now also show you a few sound installations and an initially sound yeah videos and that I worked on and then new project which has to do with dissecting the so called uh a long war and I'm very happy to be have sort of showing it to you guys here because it actually has its origins in this part of the world so maybe even some of the locals would have use this long back in the day so but in

Abstract Darsha Hewitt is a Canadian artist working in new media and sound. She is known for her examinations of communication technology in the domestic sphere and her use of DIY aesthetics and practices as an artistic method. She makes electromechanical sound installations, drawings, audio-visual works, how-to videos and experimental performances with handmade electronics. Through deconstruction and experimentation with failed and obsolete technology, her work demystifies hidden systems within machines as a way to trace-out structures of economy, power and control embedded throughout capitalist culture.
