that was the
end of the week and a and b but thank you all for coming we are about to start the next talk think bagel carefree itself on the obstacles to think of emergent technologies in the field of Nursing Science all speakers of Hanoverian an and a cop mother they both work on the use and development of technology in nursing Hanna is examining which parts of nursing should be supported by technological solutions she does research on augmented reality used in nursing and it works on feminist science and technological studies as well as critique of the political economy she is the editor of a book that just
came out here in 2017 cybernetic that capitalism revolution the amounts Batory perspective in technological change I hope you will listen to their talk with great interest there is translations into N English and German and on the website that you can find on the on the site enjoy the talk be thank you cared for this and
this introduction welcome to our talk and think big or care for yourself on the obstacles to think of dimension technologies in the field of Nursing Science and very proud to talk here on this the b minus and a couple more son of and um let me shortly and say something about the perspective that ever take and in this talk and as I did in the book that was just show what I would do it
again and to give you time ready-to-wear write it down or something I'm interested in the and understanding of technologies especially and understandings of technological change I'm looking at and how different societal agents and relate themselves is seen this change and i in the book we did this some that different agents like daylight technology Frankie on initiatives and thus appears on trade unions and today and you want to talk about care and their relation to technology and the VODIS added orders and 3 steps and I should say
that it would take around 25 minutes then even have 5 minutes left of the would be and happy to get 1 2 questions from the audience and backed however for those of you with that of not get the possibility to talk to us or to contribute something to i talk please free and 2 approaches after votes or and to check out our university that pages and get in touch with us some again the following 25 minutes on the evil talk about um the relation of Nursing Science and Technology in order to expose it as problematic 1st and I would talk about not in science and what we actually talk about anything as in science and I a this and to the question of what we mean when we talk a nursing sensible technologies afterwards and introduced you'll in our and a current research project on our augmented reality and she talk about what is going on right now in this the Future of research OK in I would start with the 1st part I want to
argue that some social for making care what visible are consequential requirement of of conceptualized application of different technologies and using science it's like that we cannot take it for granted to talk about care it is things to the extraordinary work of feminist political activists artists writers and here is a serious that today yeah and so it's situation to talk about King can work as a structured and structuring activity at all I mean to talk about here apart from it as being a label of laughter it was embedded in the new left social movements on in the 19 sixties in some countries around the world that are materialist feminist risk traveling to expose and can work as a notable part of social reproduction In these efforts the relation between predictive of productive labor entry productive labor has been exposed it as in their the interdependent dependent as depend on each other the statement supertrees straggles have made care were visible by denaturalizing out Carrick has been revealed as an essential precondition of a bourgeois society is capitalist production however and the invisible of course is not the same as gimmick when I think of nice and still today can work next of societal appreciation those circumstances comes for example this on your wages and poor working conditions come wants to learn more about the ongoing struggle is recommended to check out for instance the Book of Helen Hastie she's a member of the technology friendly extend of feminist collective flamboyant coupon X. and she's an associate Professor for Media and Communication at University of as long and she emphasizes on the task the the continue the discussion of making can work with the bill visible as a part as a notable part of social reproduction she proposes to the rethink living arrangements living standards and the role of domestic technology and therefore she opens up and a discussion on automatization of certain aspects of health care and despite a lot of controversy surrounding his and she says the opening to automatization it's a refusal to naturalize this work OK victual Nursing Science and and we can see how these social political economic movements that I just mentioned those emancipatory struggles they obviously affects the theoretical who 1 of Nursing Science which in turn influences the conceptualization of technology and can work settings speaking for German context of not organizing signs contemporary nosing scientists there's still overwhelmingly busy this the professionalization of health care they are partly still engaged in establishing nursing science as a scientific discipline that describes and develops reasonable practice on the basis of independent nursing research distinguishing sides as independent from medicine is seen as a cornerstone in this struggle medicine as a life signed discipline is probably rightly accused of being paraded by strongly functionalist partly mechanic partly 7 paradigm I just formal and mathematical paradigm and might be seen as a as a reflexive pair around there is a reflexive background against which this young and ambitious on disappear has constituted itself it is the German context yes week and what by drawing on critical series and losing scientists rejected purely medical approach to body processes which are often those medical our approaches they often comes in explanatory modes of for some quantifying rationalizing technologiesand nursing practice in contrast the as opposed to approach human beings experiences of health and signals and modes of comprehension of a fully understanding for example by phenomenologically reconstructing individual meaning and collective sense structures so in comparison medicine nursing and medicine profess to explain diseases by formalize events a formalized thinking in thinking and there's nursing Sciences supposed to comprehend being healthy or being sick by pneumatic faculty by a save simply and playing by the that is why Nursing Sciences drawn highly controversial constructs like intution or implicit knowledge here we still have witnessed a movement off making visible what was made invisible before socially politically theoretically exactly at this point on find a particular strong rejection of different technologies and care work when using scientists since technology especially information technology are conceived as means of explanation these technologies are identified this too formalistic paradigm that supposedly cannot comprehend the implicit part of human beings experience he is the difference targets that I have mentioned meet each other they both are targeting at onto epistemological Regine's of capitalizing rationalizing technologiesand I say kind of take 1 this process just in order or in order which is an important reports who to include the excluded to quantify the quantified and also to detect the technologized the technologized so and just sum of this 1st part and it's important to keep in mind that both the histories of feminists
efforts to make ever permissible and academe extracted of establishing as in science as a scientific under subpoena both interlinked the Gopalan in their ambition to emancipate themselves from formalizing sinking infecting they also share basic parts of their theoretical foundation as a result and always mysteriously an indeterminate part of the human being's existence is supposed to to be a crucial counterpoint of technological formations we could see that I think you um so but the question of course is what are those what is technological formations and how to situate nursing practices this in them so for this and let me our tell you what uh technology needs the is in science talk about it
so technology what we talk about it and as I already said that the human being is depicted in different critical series a counterpart of technology it is this image actually would right now and seems to be increasing please challenged for example then think of technological operations on micro temporal levels as and technologies to and they are confronted with an entity that act beyond human beings sensational perception and the 1st think of technologies power to control us meaning the regulating sense of control then we cannot but conclude that it's not just a human beings action that makes sense to us the systems and operations of contemporary smart objects are increasingly unraveling the image of the human as an exceptional sense maker this is the technological conditions that for some decades now and challenges particularly go humanity to come to rest and it was ever show who described as ongoing basically technologically influence displacement of sense as a representation of sense he ever here as a professor of media philosophy at invoke my finalist in Germany just claimed that after an organic and after mechanical state of nature the entering our on a cinematic state of nature by the end of the 18th century as a heuristic uh heuristic pietistic so we and the cybernetic state of nature finally describes an error where objects in different disciplines academic disciplines and time series are increasingly exposed as an act of intelligent and communicating um a growing object-orientation proves the environmental ization of agency as well as Steven ever and environmental lies ways of being and as a reminder I should that shortly say that against this this and mentalization of agency and which bills object so spot abstractions or environment just an example of this and my mentalization and against this background the MUT tradition of critical series that I mentioned and for them objects and he conceived as a means homage to human subject intentionally uses to transform its reality that means in and those critical series human beings toward use is conceptualized as a mean that 1st certain and of course only do humans had up those ends and tools are used in order to supplement and to call this the indigenous and indigenous sorry and neediness of human beings the and it is In this way that technological artifacts are always conceived as the other side the outside of the human so indexically from this point and that come to my to act more and that to the and and from except the disappoint the proposed to rethink the role of technology in health care in Nursing Science on the challenge to enlarge our mythological marginal new forms a mode of interactions in which just some 0 point up those environments realizations of new forms and note is environmental izations and modes of interaction has to be conceptualized you might see technologically mediated relations between a patient and analysis and the also for well-being as for example Jennifer ports has put it in her book can edit distance from to some of it would be ignorant to think that sentence like for instance are ubiquitous computing lever arm already established relations untouched additionally taking relational operations of technological artifacts and human and entities not into account would be is somehow the short-sighted and also urged for centuries and the new ecological paradigm a term that also have shown is scorned on scene size to be necessary and it also by Nursing Science and in order to conceptualize how scarce taking place in social technological environments not at least to find a place from there also capitalization of health care and everything might be rejected the place of their technological systems might be conversed and used in an emancipatory and self-determined way so he that to finish and on a scanner to show as how contemporary ecologies of care look like now I
get to the 2nd part of the presentation with which is quite different from the first 1 because the first one was on how we could think about technology and what's going on in this and that and then when I came to us and like university I experience but all technology you should be careful and the father's I studied this is computer science and I was just not used the thinking so it's like me a lot and and now I'm working in a research project where this both sides are struggling in all the time so it's like the care for and try to think about how to conceptualize technology and how those can change nursing and the daily work of nurses and at the same time that you have this research project and you have kind of the goal of the and creating prototypes and evaluating them and during practical research empirical research and bringing the technology into the practice of how it's going to work so what kind of argumentation to do this
is the demographic change the big claim that this 1 change the delay getting all and there'd be not enough care that could be solved by a technological solutions and just yesterday in the talk about China's social credit system we also had just technological solutions for social problems that maybe not the best solution it's not the best way to do it and but we still do take a look at how could Augmented reality in nursing look like and augmented reality I think most of
you may know it's like displaying virtual objects into the reality this was 1 of the marketing pictures and they promise you a lot of things are possible and you augmented reality can be really useful in a lot of fields you can community would communicate with their colony Q and a different Wilmanns that work on the same virtual it affects that and we have the question what can be into that fall nursing so to me took some workshops Bruce nurses and nursing managers and we came up with a lot of use cases and currently we are examining 2 prototypes on the 1
on the won't care management we have this this and different devices as well as we are trying evaluating a prototype on the mosaics and 100 and the prototype on the Microsoft taller lands and they both have in common that they should support the nurse and doing the documentation for the moment so so the nose can now ask into the documentation right caring for the patient that means that the interaction between the 9th and the patient may change T that it could be possible to save some time and that also could endanger the quality of the documentation because the documentation is being done right the time the nurses there and has to see the moment and this is what those prototypes have in common that whole prototype allows you to
support the method of measuring of the won't instead with the those extra 2 types you have to measure the length and the right of the room on your own and then you can use voice commands to uh put it into the documentation Mr. Holland's prototype this is what you see right here when you look closer so the gas you get this image and you can make a point on the edge of the bones and a point on the upper side image and the method of measurement is done automatically so the number you see is the measure measure number and the blue dots are the edges of the world actually this prototype cannot detect the edges of the wound automatically but this could be under further consideration and the 2nd prototype we actually by evaluating is on the that dropped management so I will show you a short video if it's
going to work yeah you can see on 10 December most of so the standards for medication all 4 10 patients at the same time it's like fall morning of mid day noon and evening and by evening and nite I'm sorry and uh and you can put the peers into the right spots by the EP showing you how to do it and if you can see here on the on the smartphone there at shows you how many kids you have to put into 1 box and you have to scan the medication fast and if used in the wrong 1 you get this but sign that it's a long 1 so you have some way of error prevention integrated as land and fathers prototype you could also think of a lot of attentions like it could get the information which medication has to be taken out tomatically or it could detect there's the pay is taken into the right box but this is actually not what we have right now balance yeah so it looks a bit less than the than the picture from the from the advertisements that maybe it can save sometime and maybe you can do some error correctness and farthest prototypes and some moderates currently evaluated by other researchers which have been evaluated there's still a lot of challenges like technical challenges and the challenge how to deal with the small display size and it's in this short battery life for sure and it can be easy to focus in this details and forget it forget the big forgets what how can we see technology how can we seeing and the intention of potential technology and the humans and what was this there was US so this is part of what the research funding quality policy could lead us to do as this and it's it's very interesting and maybe there will be some some good things to do with this technology and this technology can can enable us to change the structure of characters and but it cannot be the we shouldn't forget everything and so
that's those and that our conclusion endophyte basically 2 obstacles to think about emerging technology in the field of Nursing Science like now 1 as the way to think about technology these days this is what unexplained and we had a stronger strata and technology and Nursing Science to establish this discipline and there have to had to be good arguments and the struggle is still going on so a lot of Nursing Science ousted busy was defending nursing from medicine and sometimes this is kind of projected but in on understanding nursing from technology because technology is also perceived to be naturalistic binary and it doesn't feel the differences in the types of it doesn't get all the other small things and yet the 2nd thing as the research funding policy which should lead you to develop technological solutions that In the best you know those solution before you really have to question because some this is this is how you tried to in how how argument that you need some some money to do something for this you know you know it's solution you want to have so thank you for your attention
bit it and so the time of the year and a lot and this time I was formed yeah work actually I think it is I use it on the research gap and on how new technologies even the relationship between the cantankerous and the person's 1 to take care of we need help and all eastern research going on about just like what I can have a new caretaking technology is being introduced into nursing yeah on the human side to to this yeah the answer to this question thank you for this and I mentioned in the last part and In the Dutch um and to put all the test who was sort of working in the field of Nursing Science it was 10 pull its parent research on a key link here is it might be that what you're looking for and she is um continuing work uh in which this as was started by an amount in wall which is also quite important name and associated and um I recommend you to check this out because you're research lines of the discipline of static forward and puts it just it's kind of a new injured in the general context of missing science is not and not be recognized especially not in this analytical tradition of Nursing Science that we refer to that we want to work with us and but as far as I can tell from her research there is a the idea of a new modes of interaction and that there was a need for example the of oncological patients that don't care at a distance by taking care of know by and certain interactional interactive technologies that those are well being it's also a question of how you measure well-being I know intuitive knows this problem but her 1st researches as presented in the book and I'm not selling anything what we could airport put which would make us as a step back from this so it's uh assistance that develop being is like secured or survivors can edit distance is that an answer to your question yeah kind after I cannot ask another question the thing will take their questions the signaling to unify them OK so we know which parts of nursing do you think would change 1st and how do you think other people will adapt to that and would be OK to take 2 questions at a time because we have 3 more questions left so like human rights microphone number 1 and handle stage you will for your talk but announced and I see the problem I think acknowledges the important and nothing but the problem and network between analysis and make the research of politics is very difficult to reach to analysis to get voice from there have your ideas also tool find a solution for this from and plant and thank you for this really important question because this kind of yeah a basic problem that you see in that field of Nursing Science and that is somehow some kind of divided in half Nursing Science and if there's in practice even though our association is based on those but the degree of organization and caring practices at extremely low and which makes it really hard to reach them to reach out to them as you said um we can see in the lower 6 for example be a newly established Flickr come up with an organization formed and just kind of step forward it's but it's also for like controversial because of this centralistic structure and I guess there's a lot of uh work to be done organizing book and you can learn for example on form example from Switzerland they are kind of a better organized and the yeah you're right this set and in that this should be happened on the same time this question of organization to be being being the position to have uh um Due to take on a critical stance on technology and also to develop and self-determined way wanted to say we want to use it like this and not like in work in other regional like in a formalizing may only and so this has to be done and organization of care workers thank you thank you we would basically out of time so do you have like a 2 2nd Revised the Internet question as well uh yes I think it's really difficult to answer how part of nursing is the changing 1st there's a lot of changes going on in doing that documentation data on computers and not on paper and so on there's a lot of change and so on but it's going on with may have more on financial structures as well collect thank you very much for both the presentation and the questions for the 2 questions I What date would be announced of the microphones entry in that Honduran and just next stage after the talk thank you very much that was which want to thank

Abstract In German nursing science the dominant position on emergent technologies demands the removal of machines from caring environments („Entmaschinisierung“). In contrast to this, European research policy heavily focus on developing new health and social technologies to solve societal issues like a skill shortage in nursing. Thinking about technology in nursing science cannot but be conflicted. In this talk we first expose requirements for particularly conceptualizing the application of technological systems in care work settings. Further we will give an overview on main arguments against digital technologies in care with an example of a current research project in the field of Augmented Reality in care work.
