good afternoon everyone and thanks for coming to this session I'm sure I'm very excited to talk to you about all close fortunately and little about that is a very quick notes note and I am a solution architect and that the US and I look at only the eyes the pond this lecture and john will still be like this and there is a solution of that for Chap that so what do we expect covered in section well hopefully we're gonna get you l deal configuration management and how we do infrastructures cold right In the last no picture of the public will define your environment 11 o'clock no and skill agility that we need is a very important element of the popular that wasn't initially you how database can help with the journey the configuration management may to help save time and hopefully no surprise that mention right by with no drama and lastly this cover some of the best practices of Hollister infrastructure who he 3 configurations and applications the environment leveraging some of this not before infrastructures coal technologies so at the background moving to the cloud of US allows provisioning in many different you waste in the old days if structure has been static and I like the 94 quite over 2 decades now and I remember I used to manage data said the build up and it was a lot of effort to support the users use requirements he could pick any weapons 6 months very optimistically up to 18 to 24 months sometimes to get environment required i'm and that includes all approvals not includes gender the right serous and got the they you the wrong skewed because should impact and weakly come that today you could scale up a whole infrastructure in minutes to support a major back anything model global for example you could go global image to let people at the time that so the scale can be achieved we all very complicated kept pass the planning and management and that so used to have a whole room of people just kept as an elected traditional matching the price infrastructure can also strictly behind so you know all the you buy the wrong so the types wrong possesses wrong and we storage no it's not the change all and the probably had a no cannot write off some of those investments and get your your argumentative sending you suck it today you could hit on online by say hey this wrong so you it's like this 1 and you couldn't do all your performance testing animal testing to see that the rights of the integration with the work of the you trying to run and it provides a very fast moving no action orientated kind of a this is what about and IT job a lot more exciting but I know that might be challenges and that's why we talk about configuration match what do they typically I mean this term has been around for a long time reading the tea the configuration of the environment but purposes of today's talk we always say that it's a practice which we use coal right to define and maintain the state of all the new things and existing resources true out the entire life sick cycle from cradle 2 great about and why we need I think about at given a doctor you what nice the you have a complex environments that especially goes back across multiple jewels kind loans to have a single place where 1 configuration support for you and the Enterprise apps and systems and then you can stay not language was any to right and we will look at the at the time would that be a no IT managers read right make changes single police and propagate everywhere To change one's everywhere right that's kind of a great thing and also traditionally MIT there's always this concept of it's head segregation me back speech no test and also production right and depending on the complexity of the environment they might skip like some on web on these these rich legal from to implementation and do a b testing on the fly we see that knowledge but traditional the snow this so it is pivot way you call on the you actually you call right would be nice if I have ability to create and they make and by time on the test the idea that example Due to know the advent of IT security and no nearly all could he know things like no all have happily wanna cry there's a lot of security concerns nowadays and your country that can go to jail if they feel some of these all the flexibility of the for example so that sometimes they have the requirement to do a task the paint has all the environment nope you likely could be tree my 6 month depend on the industry in In the old days you have to maintain pretty much the whole set nearest all this same systems you have in production and you allow the pen passes or the or the the comply fault is going to be viewed environment because you don't want to cannot create issues and has production environment where you have like customers but expensive now the case with the clout you can actually because it evokes integration of the production environment walk will be 5 because they know and flight entire life for like environment allow your reviewers bullpen cantons which ever the up to go out and so they test environment and this is the changes documented go back and change of court again and guess what you have non-unique comply environment and the guarantees perfect every time you run so this have 1 of the great things about the advent the cloud is to create this level agility because even if you will not no clouding you doing count light down from holes that services used you need undermined infrastructures support so once you can if find that those systems the idle with plot you give it back and you bring up again we needed mixed up to the great use case that seeing a lot expression of financial or the regulated industries so moving on some of the configuration assets that people have to deal with include things like computer resources systems and holes integration application configuration as some examples of Computer and and this is not a comprehensive list was just give you an idea this was thought about 1 easy to the you nexuses not form grant you could have a whole bunch of obvious is the confusion fast when winners holes style known for for a unique so far a Windows machine now to retreat the right about the packages spouse systems so those are examples of all West in hosted creations and most of all also the ACS configuration where you might have dependencies that need to take care of it was not that big of the at an equal that of the dependency doesn't run right on service restorations credentials and all these things can the polyp and revision management and feel control and also bear in mind the fact that we're running clock speed Nollie's and high-skill doesn't mean that he could take itself right there is a need for us to patch updates testing of new stock will installations configurations environments that changes and will want to things that we need to do not hold that we need medial how environment runs because we all belong and and we don't know the people or we will have a good night's sleep right especially on a holiday this species you go wrong right and we would like to be with you the law in the way we handled environments ongoing management also requires to right and we all know unless check on because there's no real hear a little from each other and don't see what the industry the bubbling up on the latest and greatest innovations in this area and the king of some of the great things of shadows bringing the table some of the aspirational started yet no they show that's very cool demo this morning which I am sure that in the near future will become product and so some of these things are examples of things that you added you it
is yours configuration right across no different stages of production of proper back and this on packages or even doing out the on it in the only access for some users that lacked a company on the long and the relevant examples of new changes so the question now is what users can be used to tackle this challenge no surprise surprise me checkpoint so that they could bring enchanted not much thanks so however and my name is Sean Carrol and um I live here in Austin Texas I'm Solutions Architect with software couple questions before we start and whose 1st time in Texas OK cool whose 1st time in Austin percentage of can't follow hands welcome but it's not gonna get 1200 friends coming to terms so welcome to Austin we're glad you're here and the 2nd about check automated use also this morning you probably know a little bit about it and what is shuffle for automated to shove automated is our commercial offering you all know we have open source which you can download and and just out of curiosity was using open-source ships today who's using open-source shut and production in who's using Chuck automated production part that's probably why you're here you'd like to know more about it and check automate works with your open-source ships server so the chef server that power shall parliament it's not different than the open-source 1 that community users were very strong believers in open source and we're going to continue this support open source that we'll have to be locked you can you chef but we prefer you pay us for it with love that song show some features of that will explain some of the of benefits of of chiffon and as always you can use it to consistently install configure managed deploy infrastructure apps shop is very good at that but we have some new features that that you might not have been aware before that chip can also do on those features are things like compliance compliance scans you can scan remediate for and compliance issues we also have a nice graphical view so agree dashboard you can do alerts and and we also have a workflow tool so CI CD you want to move fast but safe so know when you build a car we expect a modern car have things like air bags seat belts safety features and the same thing applies to delivering software speed if you want to deliver features and bug fixes quickly but safely you gotta have a lot of testing and safety of you know measures in place to achieve velocity while avoiding risk this'll be review for many of you but these are a couple of examples of chef recipes on the left you have a Windows recipe or setting up I us and on the right we have a very similar recipe for configuring Apache on a Linux server so that the chef DSL for domain-specific language works equally well on Windows or Linux even so we're scenario that's you have those waivers of arrest and Mac OS to some folks configure their laptops using shift using chef recipes and cookbooks so the basic idea is you collect a bunch of resources together much like Lego building blocks at Tinker Toys put them in the right configuration hand that code over to show clients and let let the client do the work for you so we wanna take the boring work and give that to the computers but the robots do what they're good reappear humans to do more interesting tasks uses a poll architecture so if you're fairly new to and we have an agent's running on every single machine and the agent most of the time is sort of quietly waiting there waiting for new instructions but every half hour Bishop quiet wakes up and a call song and says hello Chef server do you have a new instructions for me at that point if there are any new policies are recipes the client will pull those down and apply them on the local node so every half-hour your machines get a refresher a check to make sure that everything you said should be in a certain way on the box is put that way if chef can fix the problem might have there's some sort of configuration drift it will throw an error and optionally alert you so great for managing a smaller large numbers of machines and uh it's continuous price you can run chef-client every 30 minutes or even more often if you wanted to chef-client only makes changes when it finds something wrong or something that needs to be fixed so automated you also get support for community tools and the chef decay is 1 of those tools assertion development kit and the ship development kit comes with a lot of great tools for testing so testing your code and testing machines in built with their code in testing for security QA purposes all that you can do with what's included in the shop decay inspectors 1 of those tools so you might have seen some of the inspect tracks if you don't and you take a look at inspect inspector is for compliance what chapters for configuration management so so we use we say infrastructures code now we also have compliances code so you can describe all of your security audit and even QA requirements using inspect we have a language now that is both machine and human-readable to inspect recipes can be used to audit everything you built was shot now the question may be why do I need to have a separate order if the chef-client ran and it didn't air out does not mean that everything's OK not exactly but it's akin to saying that yes I always get it is my homework and I have a daughter and she she she's working to get good grades and I know I I days every time because a graded papers myself right this is what you might call a conflict of interest you you ask the lawyer of for some most and you have to have a separate order the common to verify that what was built was in actually correct so there's a difference between hay ran correctly and the machine that chef built is meeting the standards as an extensive so that's were inspected sense of life you might notice a cooking thing you are you're check of so if you don't like food related things and sorry all the sky talking so your stomach's rumbling the unfortunately you have some lunch and wanted to try to barbecue here OK there's a lot of great places walking distance from very hard not to find barbecue in Austin Texas if you want to wait at Franklin barbecue answer to the most famous 1 unit of Franklin and you gotta get up at like 1 to do it or pay some or pay someone to do it for you but just clients of course we talked about that as the software agent that lives on every mission and then we have a huge library of community cookbooks and recipes so I like this because I'm lazy and I was system and and I don't like to do work that is necessary or someone else already done let's say you needed to install job on a Windows or Linux machine I could certainly right and recipe to do that but the good news is the Java cookbook is great that's already been written it's well maintained it will install nearly any labor of job of it you need with all of your options that you know you could imagine are available to you why would go reinvent the wheel so many many cookbooks are available on our supermarkets I did a search for a ship supermarket you can find it and all in all sorts of standard application frameworks different packages are available there and then finally test kitchen which is my very favorite tool was certain test kitchen which is OK good that's more than it was last year was using test kitchen are recognized as any I wish I had test kitchen 10 years ago was in a lot of time and trouble in spend about machine very quickly write some code and test it right then and there machine and a machine looks a lot like a production machine and if you use the same chef cookbooks to build the test kitchen instance that you use in production you have a lot of confidence that the changes you make inside a test environments are going to be OK when you push amount to production so support for all these tools is included which uh Parliament you get visibility into the state of their nodes you may have seen some of these graphs in this morning's demos are visibility we have a the ICT pipeline you can simply drop a chef cook book and 1 and then immediately you get things like code review it's amazing how i um code review is not really
a fitting in the arts world so much developers understand us right the pair programming and doing all this stuff but the idea of and treating code um ber infrastructures code for a lot of organizations is fairly new I when I was a sysadmin my idea testing was monitoring light is green and I'm going on because nothing's broken but that was a test right the that's not enough especially in 2017 if you're describing a infrastructures code you can use all of the things that fit the application world as used for many years like unit tests Winter syntax to us and of course simple code reviews and 1 of the safest near 1 of the easiest ways to decrease risk and increase safety is to have patent another pair of eyes look at that code before he does this look OK should we push this change a lot so all that's included in the the ICT pipeline of workflow and of course compliance you can run scans compliance scans on every single machine in every environment in your infrastructure every time chaperones I think about it for just a moment how powerful letters and and when remember that little security incident we have about a week ago I wanna cry it a make anyone want Christ In the OPS books in the room have another slide with the big ransomware window and it's it's kind of a trigger moment for some people like that it really angry at I can't be have all weekend so does anyone know in the patch for 1 if I came out March step and what if you only patch 1 support as a problem right attached in February and the you know the patch wanna cry came out in March that's just too long you can't wait 3 months patches systems anymore not not in this day and age when so many machines are exposed to the internet and may potentially have vulnerabilities they your machines are reasonably secure someone else's machine become infected mission and what was the vector for cry uh SMB protocol 1 as in the original 1 to someone out there have had port 139 import 445 exposed to the internet it only takes 1 right was that that were Martino Trojan just behind the firewall it's mean of game over usually because most organisations have that and shall method of security very hard outside squishy middle so instead of patching once a quarter would you can patch every day or what if you could scan every half hour and no within hour what are my patch levels so we call this continuous compliance 1 up at any moment in time know exactly what the state of all of our machines are so that's a bit of a overview and background check automated itself now talk a little bit about AWS ops works and what managed shove autumn it looks like where the question that the 1st make hand really talking about barbecue in makes money cry at this they saw here to talk about it and it also looks the channel and they you let this 1 you know how many of you if you know the morning in heard the Scott call them so this is basically we hope is a place where customers would go for configuration management on in the candidates desert which always hung of you I G a that is users great thank you the amount that I know a lot is known to have different variants in its law on Penn as well but the the good thing is with all words just welcoming you can actually not just mentioned in this connection on-premise well it supports only match shack alternate server and it's a partnership is in the partnership between chat and it appears in the the product of each of these corpses so question is how do you create the the this much shot over right it's basically just a couple of clicks and you can get any gain after running the 10 minutes there's not a lot of parameters you need to set up so here screen in you give it name for each them this latter region a moment we support tree regions 2 US and 1 and year we will add more based on customer feedback in the mind and you choose the instance size that you want to write and edit what we have some little helpers to give an idea of how many nodes will support based on the the machine size and by the choose from that see now standing up and made his window so you know when you won the medians happen membrane Schwann mentioned you get automatic security updates portion of Maine USA get automatic automatic shut version of creatures well so both of those that you can count and you decide when it's your window for example you can say that I want to have once a week maximum up now and you set it up and then know the nation's revisit stages you wanna make a change to where else this Leslie do the his screen that was used as well you conceptual back ups and daily weekly backups this is the incremental backups right so nondestructive and backs up things like your cookbook recipes your roles you collected no information across price n you decide how often you that you also and decide how many generations of that led like the most pessimistic we choose the wrong and operations but it's really up to you how you configure it the maximum this visibility based on a system what else is there to do well not too much actually that so we met country creation measurements of multiple worth of of thus the backups the best basically you eat that's check variant of grief as well all you have to do is focus on writing cookbooks and focus on operating environment and focus not getting page what are the benefits from this about it allows automatic instances share so a restriction and I John mentioned in this things like you know people would use 9 by choosing and all those things that they use and it's all part of no this is this year just run you can secure and scale the autoscaling groups is also like the you pay as you go and another copy much about it because I'm just covered a lot of people's money and it's a possible easy to announce grant an API endpoints was getting and Nachman and most of all legal increased whose all the best practices they needed the support and guidance as well because this is the age of years all offering as what used is called the examples of trapping the 2 instances with correct configurations not data running instances sure that instances comply to pre-existing policies alternate no all scaling applications my favorite feature this the compliance check we all cases and opportunity evidence if you like to buy have a meeting is then we could avoid some of those painful moments like shown give agree example pure 1 patch cycles and if it isn't being also a window you might impact so I really like this that his compliance so when that elected Hanover that's shown is that if you're nicer what true enlightened backstop the student text as a little small receiver connected there the the thank you for this there we go and that room and the your eyes you can see that I
make a bigger sort of just happened the numbering bringing binoculars but now it's right so before we and jump
into here which take a look at the control panel you might wanna spend 1 of these of yourself and this is the thing you can you can do at home you can do it right here and then a bunch of you have AWS accounts so it's really quite easy just going to your control panel going the AWS control panel and scroll down here and look for OPS works this right under here and the management tools actually spun this stuff right before we started as you can see it's already ready now I'm anyone in the room then using shaft more than for 5 years couple seasoned veterans or was it like setting ships server 5 years ago all from policy you to kind here also terrible liar it it it was hard but we use to send consultant on sites for a week to get all of the bits and pieces in place and get the customer happy with the ship server the now it's gotten much much easier fortunately but you can install yourself and you know what's better than than automation of meeting area boring repetitive tasks and 1 of having someone else do it for you so in this case we're having Amazon the OPS works spokes have built this and push push-button easy easy tool to use social media show you another you know example will spend 1 more to easiest registered create server column B pick your region we support 3 0 this is just the region that the automated service that you can support machines anywhere in Amazon or on press so anything that can reach this machine you can manage it was shift picture size depending on how many nodes you plan to converge and and suspicion the next day you can connect by SSH if you want or you don't even have to log on at all in his life he the rest of these can be left defaults or you can change in if you wish and this can leave all the defaults and have large that's it listen coffee you probably do doughnuts and and then come back and you'll have a shelf on server ready to go we even give you links for your user and password download credentials here and in what we call the started to so that contain 0 here Schottky your private key that you can use with the knife tool so the 1 I start up earlier
actually when and the and you can see even just
20 minutes some already able to interact with the API of the shop Parliament server so makes it also very easy to restore from back up to my grades you need to build another 1 of these and resize it's all that stuff is a lot easier than it used to be so that's the back and
this truly is an Amazon product the Amazon owns this with our help we help them to build it but if you have a an AWS account you can go ahead and use this and paid by the hour pressure never unable to do that for today and now you can you can do that so see what you can do when you actually have automated stood up and we know about the Battle of some maintenance stuff this is a knife command that I put together quite a long for you can store some of this in a file or a set of a rule and this is using the knife command to stand up a new instance so go around us terminal the the conference Wi-Fi and
because when you bigger font here to think see the success that option and most 30 . 4 you you know I'm a good jump onto a different um Wi-Fi here this continues to be like so Onsager pretty so but but the hand watch this would happen during a live them with pension everybody that's what you do with Windows machines right taking reboots and Chuck handles the windows reboot rather gracefully now but it used to be the case but if you're configuring a Windows machine any require a reboot chip client can pick up right where it left off after the review which is a super and the future there from the breakout the old Task Manager OK but there to it with fire so various take broken demos for 400 Alex but that that that that that that this doesn't get better and better at the same for you very recognizes the 1st Council moreover the partial this
changes your static regarding the a link
from what the turning using on memory the
article cover removed and I'll tell you a bedtime story while we wait for it the 3rd and at the start show up article that use the nuclear option nearly all the
users who require a drive down the data thankfully we don't do that anymore so I probably will get you to the new from the promised land end was my honey pot from 1 price the and the use yeah and even
if it's not plugged into the internet it's secure OK well that's really must take a little tour of and some of the things you
might not have known you can do with boxworks works on it so it is essential parliament that you get if you download it yourself and solid with some cool extra features and we've already mentioned back ups and maintenance but my favorite things are there
the new API and points that created so what's going in out and the docks reversed so where school OK so look over
here these are API and points you can hit them with the command line with the you know easy to command line tools and you can also build these things into the things like lambda functions someone 1 really need use case there is also a scaling so traditionally if you wanted to use chef and on a scale your application you have to 1st of all spin up the new E C 2 instances you need to then somehow bootstrap the instance to the shop server and then have that instance configure itself right or maybe you have the instance prebaked in your spending it up and running chef at the end to just but the last mile of complete on now when you scaled down you need to do all that and delete the node Premiership server to keep it kind of cleaned up In the past that was a bit of a hassle and to bootstrap a node you need to have keys you need to run the knife command and it can be a bit of a pain to do that with auto-scaling because you've got a valid of magic to get the keys in the right place so what they've done is create an API and points where you don't need a log on the server at all really you can actually just register and the machine directly with the chef server using DAPI as you know what they used to be a there is an associated press I was looking for so what is it do it associates a new node with the chef server so it's very similar to the knife bootstrap but you avoid the trouble of having to schlep those keys around and worry about how to make this work is simply hit that API and point and then the the machine appears in your ship server you can also automate the removal of the machine from a chef server so that not only you keep it clean but you also can have not get built or something but you're not using right so scaling up and scaling down is a great blog posts to the so just pull appeared person a monster the the the yeah the I don't have the exactly but it's in the AWS blog um might be here some great tutorials on how to get started so there's lots of help available you wanna take this 1st and then I would start with a quick start guide that's a good way to get started and they also have some user data scripts that you can use destructors in there and then as soon as you spend the instance it appears in your shop server you can start running you're on our community cookbooks on right away but sat back over your demonstrate so decided to behave
itself wake up tomorrow that yeah so
OK so we got a demo site here it's a
window size we normally demo at Linux and I decided to create a demo with Windows just to show the show works equally well on either platform it 7 you have to remove some
of the we work with that right when different creatures and different beast than when it's and you know requires a different type of care and feeding and you can you can do that which uh the other you thing that yes is distributed and he rebooted right so as they go with machines Windows Server 1 2 and 3 we built this with the shock recipe I can look at every step of the bill if anything went wrong I can easily pinpoint uh where the problems were so can see 1 failed around here that in the chef and a failed run but then it recovered so that's kind of nice maybe that might save you you know late-night call having to get up and fix this thing so all is well with this notion we can take a look at it in a browser we want In
this sample size is called for coffee
and this so apparently still ship cookies to pretty standard stack it's a net output us this is the cookbook and built but just open up here I a wrapper cookbook called my 4th coffee and we're going to the recipes so this should look familiar to the taken shut fundamentals a work which pretty standard stuff the but still a little demo of configuration drift and whenever any system and ends in the room ops books do love it when people change things on emissions active built and and the motor yeah and then they may get mad at you and say what is a spiral keep changing back I just put it that way he said well let's constructed it is meant to do that for you and so so let's do that now it's going in and the the not a user were going to go ahead and turn on Telnet server and tell that clients and a test you're going to get us to test kitchen as well this is simply due kitchen log in and that's going to give me a log into my my test instances on Linux machines this'll so structure into SSH and on a Windows machine in RTP so just integrate password here I for right theory on another
Windows machine and this is actually running the 4th copy out and the
going and manually make a change on this machine so wanna and roles and features a totally new told because uh I think it's 1995 the surprise actually pretty or not surprised how much told that there still is out there OK chance been a bad boy and so tell the client and tell server on this machine so all around this will just go ahead was out no test
kitchen I can do kitchen West I can see my machine it's in E 2 as well so this is really great for testing and you think about it 1 of these things cost per hour 20 cents right something like that tend 10 you know a dollar 2 it's 1 those super huge singer C Excel's or whatever they're called let's go ahead and do a kitchen converge yeah that test kitchen is going to to run it's only going to fix things that binds they're wrong so ideally we should see tell getting turned off again so ideally you can educate that user and say hey you know if you need tell there was talk that we can figure out how to turn it on for you with the chef recipe in the security folks might not be too happy with that but it needs to be captured as code right don't build snowflakes you think you ever might need to do something with you know with the server more than once put it in a shack recipe you can see most of these blue by pretty fast they'll say up to date in that means that the resources already in the right state ship doesn't have to touch it now this stuff here is DSC and unheard of DSC that desired state configuration another benefit to using shoppers that we we plug in BSE really nicely and so tell that is now turned off so simply keeping this machine in the right state so that's 1 very easy you powerful use case for shaft here's another 1 but I wanna maintain a good security posture of mining the turn off things like SSL the 3 to might have seen this in the demo this morning this is a very similar thing with the Windows machine a real time OK and stand with inspect remediate was shut off and I will show that right now but it's quite easy to do in this case I was simply run a recipe
here that's going to turn off all the registry keys for the bad SSL and remediate my machine that way 1 last thing I wanna cover before we wrap up turn this supports multiple ships servers multiple data centers and multiple organizations so if you have distributed so you can use them and manage them all in 1 place using show automated so I think that's about all we have for time and the 2 questions that we don't know about what it concious of bread have questions and that the time that it
