how long an on and
off if
you with without listeners and is from a topic so much more engaging with how Muslims and the Muslim presence in is discussed in Europe these days and how actually Europe is imagine through debates on Islam and Muslims who live here and in these discussions are an important part of current identity politics exclusive or inclusive and pluralist or purist narratives of Europe as a cultural and social or political entity and I will not hide haiku that debates about nuisance in Europe reveal important aspects of how Europe is understood maintained and imagine today garden so I will in the next couple of minutes not speak so much about Muslims and on this continent but on how they are discussed and the entire Muslim demonstrations and that have taken place in
2014 end of 2014 and and carried on uh in the beginning of 2015 and still have happened and raise the but but with fewer numbers of people and when about 17 thousand and then the next week about 20 thousand people took to the streets of duration in these abstracts you getting in these on small Strolz and that we're actually inspired by and by the 19 89 and demonstrations the I a lot of people have been surprised the media seem to have been surprised a lot of politicians have been surprised but as researches looking at these debates we could not have been surprised at all and that was
actually pretty clear that there is currently forming an end time Muslim I'm sentiment and that is not only in Saxony on that is not only in Germany but it happens in the Netherlands it happens in the UK it happens in Scandinavia Ireland Denmark in Norway and Sweden and Finland and so on so this this and you could call it a really it at European or at least the Western European and phenomena on the was was pretty
quickly so let me quickly translated yet again patriotic Europeans against the Islamization of the oxidant right so this arm this format has been taken over by some by a Danish group that has then been kind of approved
off by a and address in part of the Gita and then I found so when I looked at the web yesterday I found 1 from said Scott from Serbia and then there is
a PG the UK Department forming and they had their margin Newcastle and in early February this year so and there are other groups that you must have no heard of like had villas with the Freedom Party in in the Netherlands is the that's the focal party that has like that the Freedom Party for the whole legislative period some been as very important for forming a um a government in Denmark in that case I and even though not really participating in the government but by approving offer much of a minority government they have been very crucial
and could even play out much more their role than if they where have would have been in the government itself so we have now about 15 to 20 per cent in many countries in Europe that have voting for and time was them anti-immigrant and actually and take you and parties now we have the the real friends in time in Finland that all fighting against a lobbying against Sweden Finland and so so we have uh as I mentioned as the full capacity and so on we have now the alternative for Germany so this seems to be really from a trend in Europe that we cannot have further ignore I would like you but what I also want
mention in this talk and that is why am speaking about imagining Europe with or without and was because what what happens with these narratives of Europe either as a purist as a nationalist um idea and we also have the Contra narratives to this and this uh for instance happened when Wikipedia became are covered in the media a lot of people took to the streets in interest itself but also in other cities that said there is no place for something like that in our city in this these are pictures from Stuttgart for
instance where also in early January there has been a huge demonstration on against anything that could be done and it was so so to say preventive an welcoming refugees
arm and so these demonstrations that also took place in Cologne and Frankfurt amine and many other cities in and of course as well I didn't they had a different
sorry different meshes message and that was the message of true all the plural Europe of a purist city of Stuttgart or cologne or plural Germany the the and in so I will adequately look into how these narratives are playing out and I will start with some with more and exclusivist
as they seem to be much stronger actually if you if you google or something like Muslims in Europe was so and you look at the pictures if you could look at pictures it seems that the indeed the entire Muslim Imam groups are much more vocal or visible let's say in the internet that's pretty pretty amazing itchy and what has happened is that there there have been a whole array of them the websites forming of networks forming and With the help of the Internet we have people and we have people on means of course pictures character tours and traveling and even takes on they're arguing against em
Islam or Muslim presence in Europe we have them traveling and throughout Europe if you remember the last decades and there have been a lot of debates and that have traveled from 1 European country to the to the other there was for instance the the headscarf debate starting in in France back then when there was no internet really and in 89 that there was this debate 1st and but it it took on and that was it was actually uh traveling again and with the book uh debate you can feel really see then that this happened um especially also through the internet and we have for instance the area you have must have heard about the minaret ban in Switzerland and actually this intent has been uh or the text for the for these and minaret ban has been traveling around and it has been tried out in Cologne on a pro code by Paul Cohen Pro Cologne I am a group it has been tried out in Austria and then in Switzerland was really successful and so it seems that some people are exchanging ideas exchanging as I said character tours and even texts and and you know and then trying it out in different national or regional context and at some point 1 of them then picks up and and and makes it in makes headlines and
similarly 2 years ago there was a big discussion in Germany about circumcision of boys especially with regard to Muslims but then it also touched upon the Jewish issue and and this was also then traveling but it never I I didn't see it ever anywhere being picked up as much as in Germany but I know in Sweden also made some headlines and so he was was just 1 0 1 1 example stop the Islamization of Europe a website and just as
showing you a little bit of what people are exchanging and and of course the common sections always and pretty interesting sometimes also shopping and so here is 1 the Germans and Japanese were interned during World War Two now i s has declared war against the Western world Muslims should be interned untill we find out which 1 of them are i s supporters so at the
but it I think the the that's a bad I 2 that this comment as well or a day actually there's a post on this website from by the Administrator and and here there is a discussion on is this question asked is it OK to oppose Islamization at all and then there are a lot of arguments given and for that and I find it pretty interesting and this is this is now point of how powers Europe imagined here if we speak in this entire Muslim voice and then immediately Europe becomes Christian I'm for instance of there's there these arguments down here where it says the Koran uses the word hate more than the Bible users love I don't wanna go into details whether that's true and but what I find interesting is that it's the Koran on the 1 side and then the Bible on the other side that you have to look at so you know it's not made explicit but but what happens when you do that is
that say so yes Europe is actually Christian and that's why we need to look at what Jesus said and right so Jesus said I'd I die for you would Mohammed said killed kill for me
so on I think you you get the point here and the other thing is some of what what gets conflated and that is some Muslims and immigrants answer immigration illegal immigrants refugees are very easily put into that merit if or or you could also say the other way around you can also follow for instance national and party in Germany and PD they chose to read invented there and Thai refugee and enter foreigners narrative and just replace that some points the refugees or the foreigners by Muslims to make it more mainstream In compatible the and in this case are the 2 recent post and Greece threatens to send jihadist and illegal immigrants to Europe so what I find interesting is that Greece is somehow not you're right in this
case the in and and maybe I
will ever come back to that word and in the same the same stubble Islamization website we have this under attack by Islamic extremists the invasion has begun so the and the invasion is some is immigrants refugees and black seems to me most as well so anything that is a strange or different is Muslim or Islam and is part of the Islamization of the invasion
and what has to be stopped in this invasion is on is the Islamization on the 1 hand and I alluded to that a little bit before it's also the EU dictatorship so the EU is part of that if you look at the whole Fayetteville there's and
from the Netherlands I'd use he also kind of mergers and criticism against EU elites with arm with his fear mongering against Muslims and well if you look I will come to
politically incorrect that a German website and in a minute and a day what they do is often they they argue that that all politicians and that would
then also be another websites that would also go for the EU level of our politicians at the EU level and is that day would I they would actually promote these minorities and these muslims and they would actually sell Europe and by doing that
and so that's just another on another image on your API is 1 of the and slogans for that narrative as
well and is and politically incorrect and I wanna go into 1 more detail of of the narrative and that is and the narrative of demographic of the demographic threat and as some of you who have heard of the use of seems book might know of that these demographic fruit predictions for the
future of Europe and in this case we have some so this a German website and that and
projects in 2002 50 from about 10 per cent of Muslims will live in Germany all the 10 % of the population in Germany will be Muslim what I and this is something that really goes on and on in these this is 1 of them most m a visible and um prominent narratives and Germany 2020 chronicle of a catastrophe and it's again so it's it's 1st mass invasion of mass immigration and uh and it's the fertility rate of and now I have a trigger warning because of my I find that quite appalling the next picture so who does 1
of the few the some horrible pictures so that the other Islamic bonds so so we have to threats in a way 1 is bombs I'm implanted by Muslims or by Islamist groups which in these narratives are 1 thing and and the other 1 is the fertility rate and this is a and
nicer version of it and I showed you earlier the post on the 20
20 projections and I really don't I wanted to share these um a commons with you begin to because I I think this is something that happens at a again and again with it so you have this prediction in 2020 will have 10 % of the German population being Muslims and then somebody comments on that might my numbers are different and then there's a calculation so 15 to 20 per cent that's what is much more possible much much more of them clustering is what have certain and so and end untill 2020 the now original Germans will diminish and so on and and we had this these calculations and was not seen as well I really love this 1 but it's similar with the weather crucial is not that the raw data but how you feel it so proper probably the feeling is is
much worse than the data scenes and and this is exact and this is now where dk from what what is the actual argument of these narratives is that here's somebody argues well the politicians and the legislative should really you know should really act up to that they should really think about these numbers and they should be a employ more pop a policeman and that can deal with more violence and and so on and so more domestic violence more violence on the street Aksay et cetera and also on whatever in in in all kinds of fields that deal with problematic populations with problematic use etc. um so it's not only fear-mongering it's as such but it's really then also demands for specific and political actions and and let me
go and to 1 more example that's also website them online and what I find very interesting is here so a lot of the things that I talked and told you about now we're actually they actually come as if
they were just the prolongation of a nationalist propaganda the so you have to German sections gifted Dutch that sections of the Danish and the Swedish and so on and it all remains very much within the national frame but at 1 point the argumentation goes to the European level and that's very interesting I think because the all the argumentation is is is deeply rooted in a nationalist idea so we are different from the days or the you know like even the fans are very skeptical that the True Finns are very skeptical of the Swedes living within the lifted the Finnish and the territory but when it comes to the most slim somehow we European and then we send these arguments traveling around Europe and uh sh tougher from Austria is
visiting fed will those in uh in in the Netherlands and his colleagues in Germany and speaks at address also had villas was addressed the 2 weeks ago speaking at the pig EDA a rally so there is there is real and personal connections but there's also this ideal kind of idea
logical or an imaginative connection and that goes to some specific some the events in the past of Europe of the and that whenever you
say something against the you know criticize them they have uh another narrative and that is this is racist approach is it always when we say something critical of Islam we are called racists and the other the other narrative would be especially on the on the German part would be we are against fashion through and we need to be that because of the German past and this is why we have to protect Jews so whenever Muslims adding something against Jews this will also be used for the narrative and so this will
be used as arguments against and the Muslim presence and and so even even the national the nationalist and and fascist heritage of of of Germany is then used and turns OK so and I think I haven't 4 of 5 more minutes
of some 3 5 good and I want to give you a very few positive or and pluralist narratives examples of that because as I mentioned that in the beginning that there were counter to narratives and mn 1 have to cut out 1 of the and arguments of the Condon narratives is that there has always been already has since of much much longer time then these n time was them and tendencies would would argue there has been a Muslim presence n Europe and that goes before the 2nd world works but uh especially so we have a lot of some pictures and stories and all excavated I'm from Western Europe so she from the UK also from Germany and Denmark and the Netherlands but this these are
and stories for instance from the UK where people then I do well they have not only been present on Western Europe P and soil but they also shared our history like Muslims fighting in the 1st world war for instance and they're
similar pictures and stories about Muslims taking part in the 2nd world war against and the Germans that so these are the narratives told and how we have pictures and stories about the graveyards of Muslim soldiers and would prove who died for for instance the British Empire in the 1st the 2nd world War it has been a
huge program running by the British Council telling our shared Europe the stories of our shared Europe going into the into the past like that but also into the president and and what I
find also interesting is that there is a there is a new on awareness for stories of Muslims who have been engaged in saving Jews so this is a story of I think and the 1 with Iranian for Persian background in France who uh who was working for the British and security service and then was also killed by the Nazis and this 1
was very sorry for the quality I couldn't find a better picture online and this is uh memory so that that was just put up 2 years ago for Mohamed Helmi who lived in Berlin and there was a doctor and I was himself persecuted by the Nazis but also held
several Jews to survive and especially as a doctor giving them treatment when they where our living undercover and at the end of last so
narrative goes back to long-standing you're European presence of Muslims is for instance Russian Tartarus and here top
tires fighting on the side with of the poles and against the streets so these are some uh top tires have been living in what is now Poland Lithuania and Belarus from for instance also uh a few of them have been living in pressure and but de at and of course you know
the story of Granada and portable by and so on and also the story of Spain of the presences in Greece and Italy are taken up and some initiatives are
telling stories about how our intended our web cams our and mobile phones would not be possible without I'm a Muslim scientists so that is a different level of argumentation all that we are living on our world that what it's based on was also created by Muslims was some scholars this is a this is a very short if a short film with Ben Kingsley explaining these stories for instance here all surgery um of tools were invented by by uh by Muslim from doctor and this is the
very last picture here around there's also the Islamic Museum or the Museum for Islamic art in the paired among resume who uh which which shows how there is a click the connection between the Muslim past and and the European presence
and also opening the museum's rounds now for actual Muslims who live in the city so thank you so much for here and yeah
for year time and I think we we reach the end and and I don't wanna finish this without also saying that I thought
and talking about these narratives he's very controversial narratives and is 1 thing and showing it but not with these pictures is 1 thing but I invited to people to join me for the next session in order to to discuss these narratives a little bit with with life people the of the thank you so much have
thank you that he was he has things for the amazing insights and only of time for 1 question or for you are there some questions in the audience even if there is discussion afterwards just raise your hand but and the the amazing talk thank you for that I think you have you any idea how all of those putting it to the European level is beneficial for those several nationalist group who whose profiting from from that I think they're all promoting as I said when they share the that is of course a big pool and they really they really help each other out with you know they serve each other with stories with narratives with caricatures they share them
they visit each other at their rallies you had real is the name for people here in your and so they translate and their their articles they're they're commons and and you know so it's so it's it's it's not so it's common kind of nationalist argumentations that I just transplanted in a way and yeah I think this is how and I would also say that the condom narratives and the narrative signal and and and you can it's like the AG and the you know it's not there you don't know where it started because they all come to each other and I think even these are beneficial for each other is whenever you puts out something positive about Muslims and something positive about kind of like the most and passed in Europe your actually feeding them and they will for instance for the for the film was thinking link if you if you look at the forward
on you tube you will find a counter for uh you know film and then telling this is all
eyes and so on so so it it's it's a real it's narratives that answer to each other and they they feed and they nourish each other actually which I find tricky because then you don't know what you know how can you react to that and that sector where we come to the next session yeah how can you get out of that without being funny I think you can
reinvent the amazing talk this

Abstract Islam and Muslims in Europe have become the subject of many debates about belonging and about national and supra-national notions of identity. These discussions are an important part of current identity politics, be it in exclusive or inclusive, in pluralist or purist narratives of Europe as a cultural, social or political entity. At this the debates about Muslims in Europe reveal important aspects of how Europe is understood, maintained and imagined today.
