What can you do with this GeoServer thing? This talk covers some of the basic (and not so basic) ways to use GeoServer to publish your geospatial data and make it look great!GeoServer made its first release in 2001 and has grown into an amazing, capable and diverse program. This also means the "feature list" is spread over years of release announcements, presentations, mailing list archives! This presentations provides a whirlwind tour of GeoServer and everything it can do today! This talk is a visual guide to the features of GeoServer. Are you just getting started with GeoServer, or considering it for the first time? Attend this talk and prioritize what you want to look into first. Are you an expert user who has been running GeoServer since Java 1.4? Attend this talk and see what tricks an optimisations you have been missing out on!

this talk introduces the feature frenzy this is going to be a fast talk we only have 20 minutes and yet they were too fast or something and why we're doing this
talk usually do stated use of a talk it covers what's new and find an interesting but according to the developers unfortunately this talk kind of misses out what's good about yourself because some of the stuff that's been really good about use it wasn't done in the last year it might be done 5 years ago out because a large number of slides it might be 30 seconds of features C. we go you ready the yeah I think have a good trip participation and to get and we
crowdsourced in order to figure out what hot topics to putting here we are star user list a number of questions and this talk is structured around the answer so this is what we think is good it's well usually think is good but to
train more but order 1 goal of take this first one are number
1 feature that people like is it's easy to install this is really important to us as developers we took a strong stance on the project about 2004 we figured we only had about 10 or 15 minutes of someone's time they were going to download your server that needed to see a map on the screen within 15 minutes where they were going to download the next project and with that in mind
right from our home page you can download from a number of platforms we've got stable in production
releases and and each download page
has downloads for a range of platforms
without a Windows installer catching stores a
Windows service which is a bit more professional set up but for those of you who have a match and
much reliance installing genes but that's fine there's install for you is pre-canned
binaries for Windows and everyone else and a award for those people using
more of an enterprise skunks et al whilst we
got this number of optional modules you can drag and drop into GeoServer and these
knows extensions and these extensions are optional but they went to the same quality assurance processes as the rest of the codebase and so they're confident the recommended often included in other downstream products we also
community modules this is cover more experimental section of grad students of something and you did on the weekend and so on a few of these are actually good
so these are some community extensions of the people recommend it's also easy to
configure yeah 1 of the main points of the user is in itself a well known user
interface quality this topic that many years ago the ease of use of user was a giant maximal file that you can call if you're with your text and people were happy and then this guy came and
said no we we we need to add to have a user interface and they provided this is idea of the user interface the good implemented as a
surprise user interface that that was the default user interface for a few years in server and then we said well is difficult to implement and is doesn't look too good so let's let's make
about a 1 and this is what you have today as we could use a face uh which is our that say that main major pointing in your 1st 15 minutes of interaction with you so that you can just point and click on a trip off your stuff so the players but some but not and as recently shown
we also have the added to our extension those used to call the purity and must of layered like you say you have a hundred shape I you want to add them to do so over a press that you can use this extension to allow them all in a in a few clicks the oracle
so we asked laser list what they liked and they said Oracle we were kind of surprised of yeah it is actually easy to
hook use up into Oracle out kind works like any other back-end database I think this is more a reflection of the map viewer then how good users 1
interesting thing that you'll hear about later in the week is we've recently added curve support to GeoServer so if you are getting currently with your article can now play along the rendering speed
is another topic which is very important and uh we have quite a few people say well just erase fast and is fast for a variety of
reasons uh results we support of course especially in the CSI being located your because we
have a number of traits uh set up in the rendering engine to simplify the geometry as we go to throw away stuff that you can see anyways and so on so that you can actually take a massive amount of data and displayed in ship in a small of a smaller in a very short amount of time
we can we are also very smart about reproduction on the fly so that we simplify geometry before projecting them we analyzed transformation uh locally so that we can do the transformation fosters this works for both vector us a bit and we have a pre
generalize that the stories that is not enough for users so that you can half of the precooked of the version of your geometry at different generalizes generalization versions and that's a very nice again for
speed there and then you can switch tables so based on the on the current the mob scale and so on uh and you can also switch other if also you you can you can have different views of the same dataset are all the same records with the different geometries of generalization we have implemented
recently a faster jet encoder and both uh foster PNG encoded which was my Christmas 2002 13 locations that so I spent in the in the
let's move on to how to ship files text as triples kind what we expect and people come up with absolutely no 1 said they liked it doesn't when usually belted well apparently not images of user's list of what we have done a lot
of interesting tricks with GeoServer and shape falsely discovered entire custom render GeoServer we gradually applied all those optimizations to the main deal so it works of anything will still but a wacky things you might not expect our we've implemented sorting so you can sort your shapefile intellectually like copy things behind the scenes but we also implemented entire like transaction independence on top of the it for us to get on the shapefiles as if it was a database and GeoServer kind of thinking a lot about our entering the job we actually have got quite a bit of work on
scalability of course we're server-side application
that in terms of scalability the major pain points so far has been the vector rendering vector maps becos basically at the result of beta in the uh JDK coded turns your vectors into being generic and that this is called scale very well especially in the oracle JDK if you go to open JDK which is open source you get a much better scaleable version of it which is called the shoes and now we have an open source product which is geared toward making it a much better version of species that scales up a lot better so as he I invite you to follow this link and they're going to bowl the modernist arises in your user install especially in Windows goes off and is not really available on only on Windows would sort of the notes you would get a much better performance much better sculpture so all this was for the way we we also
have a number of scale-out clustering solutions we have 1 which is based on the sharing of the original beyond the various version of servers we have all which is using JMS masses passing to share of state of their the configuration is is very interesting if you have a very actively changing configuration just over so that the uh it's it helps to maintain a cluster if you have people continuously adding a new layer removing them taking and song on in interactive way the phrase this is kind of an interesting 1
I have 2 meanings of free and
usury is a distributed under the GPL license this means it's free to use and as you also free to play with it as a developer and add your own work into the mix the only thing we ask you that you do is provide your customers that same freedom and the other thing is
new to the agency was available 0 dollars when a when doing really well and in
more short ones over you for liability Act of k reliability so just eraser server-side application it's a long believed process the test will serve thousands and thousands of handling millions of requests so we care a lot about its reliability we have several
layers of quality assurance and what we have a unit test that the new during the build making sure that any change of people make to improve just haven't even break something else and lost desperately take of a large part of the process we have our
continues billboards that checks so that the newcomers are going i didn't break the pillbox at random memory name it is sports so yeah this is yesterday picture and we have a clear some problem but that's the that's let's see every time we have a problem we get a litigation against all prick between me and body of
the we have the pull request mechanisms by which people send us code and that we can view the change is tell them to to make adjustments tell them to implement the unit test and stuff like that before accepting new any any new changes over so we can a a very nice thing going in terms of quality of you Mr. step
up the pace with the main reasons people used to use is to serve data on the Web of were making use of OGC open Web standards for this and we actually have a fair bearing on
the standard supported you can see various flavors of Web Map Server Web Feature Service Web Coverage Service for those people working with masters of Web Processing Service were quite excited with what to do a bit of an analysis and cascading you would see a study 1 the catalog service lets you out provide some metadata describing information we also support a number of the rendering and formats are available out we do run
GeoServer past the site certification tests we paid for this a few times and and we've got as official OGC standards have approval even for versions where we don't have a sticker we are running against the site and certification suite who the pressures project it makes
it very important to have an open an active community of course small we have the domain is
going where everybody can participate in the respective over a million is for people that level of user meanings for people that use we have the voice meeting every 2 weeks between the core developers uh we have of thing going cold you see purchase of improvement proposals for every larger change people have to described before and what they want to do out out you want to do it with every other resources properly implemented and we have a lot of time books through these cable that ensures that we have a continuous and predictable releases every every moment so there
is 6 months cycle we have uh right now just over 2 6 0 it's coming out is going to be the stables is for 6 months and then is gonna become the maintenance years for about 6 months during the maintenance phase we only get bugfixes during the stable series we get some minor new features are well and then we have developed a series of in which we implement that good
news that this is more almost all more or less sorry talked about this so it's important to also see that the condition that we are going to have a
topic about its will and we have a section about much of support as well that's a great 1 for me to take and send money now think you up there is
actually a list of providers on the use of the website these organizations which either directly help from the project so organizations like the boundless you solutions and we also kind of experience providers so these are consulting organizations that have a history of running training courses helping customers in the local market and so forth and I do encourage you to to contact these organizations they help to keep us fed and I really like keeping the developers and the OK so we do have
documentation documentation is a key step between having software and being able to use it for and we actually have a
user guide we used to have a wiki and it ended up there kind of written a large portion of it and I was getting tired of that so well you might become freer delete poured in the wiki content spam over to of documentation build system and now required enjoyment and we've also had a lot of really specific topics explored in a user guide so there's an SLD cookbook and for everyone he's really tired of externalities and CSS code book how we also take care of our developers with the element at a quick starts and build instructions and release instructions and there's a number of topic-specific tutorials animations and styling and so forth
web server when we ask people what they'd be like about register here you can see we have a lot of answers about the web not service while what
services is what generates map on the Web along with Dublin and that but we have a choice of
a range of choices in terms of studying languages we supporters of the 1 0 loss to the 1 1 and also that you
would use assess that everybody likes or at least everybody us strike on Friday you what we have are a number of
fiber obvious reprojection things
going from through that uh whose support for general interest maps and their
uh there I catch knowing which is
integrated with your server so it's very easy to use you have to set up a separate system you basically just create a layering spike Bonnie by
default so it's easy so speaking of avoiding x amount we achieve a text that domain-specific language and which lets
you write your queries using something
similar to SQL that's focused just on making individual requests are users like it it makes the list we also support Web features
so this this is 1 of the original reasons people used and would use so this allows you to publish inventor data to the web
and you can see from the so the suspects the popular you are when
people when we ask people what they like about user the arc is the came up as in all the integration so you can easily connect
or being published maps out of it of course that
postures we get very few if they're utterly feedback about it and where we were kind of surprised about it any it is the best
supported the prison just a I think that everybody it's just taking it for granted not talk as the that's what is sorry that when like that of the
popular features supported came Tamil to Kamal as 1 of the ways to get information to Google
Maps and Google Earth it's actually pretty easy to use use and our set up and it's 1 of the format supported we also support some the
advanced features if you configure your layer with time series data you'll be able to get some animations
going out or elevation data to be able to get some kind into the equation SQL Server is
another 1 of those data formats is supported people quite
enjoy next up with got Web Processing
Service uses of feature frenzy write it as a good with the case where processing
service and I is integrated into GeoServer is an optional extensions you gotta is take an extra step to download and install it and allows you to break out a lot of analysis functions and it also is integrated with styling engines the so you can actually use
word-processing styling to in the starling engine to dynamically construct a heat map from my from points and so on so it's quite exciting stuff so
in order to write your own i processes he actually used tools Java developer there's also the Geoserve project and which allows you to write your processes In scourer try find out or JavaScript so good stuff and
given all the database and scenes of people are very excited about our our that connection
options yes we can connect it to be too it's easy to say
about that we have popped up schema and panic out of the this is of course you sponsors is the main developer of its have scheme allows it to to
take our set of flat tables and publish them as I as a complex that the model saw as a preview want the flock table and it's very important for expire compliance and when you have whatever complex that the of such as a Jewish e-mail you know that the 1st the has
been 1 of the main features of the user over 40 years just has been 1 of that sole implementers of the bloodthirsty for for a number of
years with a professor you can do when making on all of your data so you can have up on a multiplier such as a huge yes again whatever or you can have your OpenLayers leaves the leaflet JS kind the injustices the tip when you're setting up a new line between wfxt off I hope that you really want people to enter the data points into inspire will some European effects
1 from so we have a good sort
of basic support sorry for the inspired by active so they can now build their metadata you need to be compliant with inspire the active and thus are used to serve the public published aspire plant services similar views sure
that not everyone is blessed with TPA that min privileges time for those people we let you define an SQL query GeoServer and we call it an SQL view and operate a little bit like fill in the blank have and we
achieve parameterize this so the web developers can as part of their WFS integuments request fill in those blanks in your query and this is a good way to get GeoServer to perform a lot of joints or rather our analysis in in the database to it's allowing to safely at publisher out and some kind of pre-canned queries the the multidimensional data yeah we
have a big push from the weather community to implement a number of extra features in just over to
support the time innovation and customer mentions uh for whether model for weather forecast for whatever you need that has a time allocation of not we it's we have an easy way to configure it we have a good support for both vector and of data that we support the number of
natively will two-dimensional form of such as NATs CDF and grid which are very important in the weather community the and we
have support for the typical of a methodological symbology soul of current to rows the wind bars and the dynamic color morning food
security I guess security and so 1 of the things you'd like to do when you publish information on the web is given a weight everyone for implement security given away to a select few people have permission to see now GeoServer does have a really strong security
model you can configure GeoServer security yourself but for people that really care about this often they want integrate use with the existing security system the delta apple or whatever GeoServer can be configured to tie into your existing set up so if you have been holding off using GeoServer based on like security restrictions from on high please give it a go on and this is a very handy in a tool for getting GeoServer deployed and that's the end of our talk
it was a feature frenzy does anyone have any questions I'm in the good question we will publish it to Slideshare something and put it on the GeoServer block the and have recently and optimizing GeoServer and in the documentation of pretty sure that it suggested recommended
Oracle JDK as the as the best choice of or open
gtk and from slicing might actually the reverse is true and that's because and you're really likes rendering performance I really like a stable to the development system so I'm a bit more like a technical architect I safety build servers are set up a test with Oracle JDK right now that means they get all that automatic QA testing so I trusted more now in the last 3 months we found had some very generous support from Dallas and your solutions in setting up build boxes against open JDK so this is the 1st year that I would recommend or injured there are significant but it was depends on how many a concurrent of words you're getting if you're going to force encounter the questions so very like load that much of a difference but if you're getting 64 or more for a single node in the cluster we have talking like 50 per cent faster so a lot of in security in in particular of controlling looking it permissions says how it to be tapped to cover right here but where way turn for that what's the best resources further learning more and that this is an interesting question the security system is documented in a user manual but a lot of the things that people end up using as such is at different flavors about after ActiveX tree Active Directory and are not very well documented in this still lurking in the community section 1 thing to point out is the small and what 1 hour of an hour or so minutes is gonna have to talk about justice there now about 1 thing
we did ask is we passed we had a question we asked users what should be next and cool down the number 1 request was for an SLD editor right now these 2 this would really like that we've got no development of funded or anyone interested in making it so the holding and waiting for SLD editor keep waiting and the other popular request Sergio get spatial like I imagine a few funny ones due package in important are still about her that she already available about what should
be the next this is the talk at the end of the week so if you'd like to know what's actually on the road that we're going to be talking about on friday found
and we got a quota system you get some of our
customers are asking how much money you need to do this so the editor
so this is a the bound was to produce solutions moved right but it's actually a bit question of money and dedication we have had I contribution show up with someone's hired a consultant and the consultant said here's a working at CDF format and even like grade how where can they contact you and the consultant look vaguely terrified went away and so just adding functionality without resources to support it doesn't really kind and that's why we got that change control process the so that to and at and but it was a bit of a frenzy so so correct me if I miss anything but there is like having said that the tiles were cast by default so fiery connects to your post yes layer my data store but driver URL that I can point of we what know about the others to separate your else the W-mass you when you 1st start up GeoServer there's also a w see your tiles service your so that different points if you want I'll server ego the tell if you want to study a messy about 1 thank you yeah the How are we free time that frenzied enough I with then put that
