some when I was with introducing this conference I of course read for the program and papers about what is a lot of stuff going on and I thought
0 my gosh you introduce something where there's so much stuff going on it's kind of chaotic but not terribly Mike let's call it an evolutionary chaos and see what people think of that I am so in order to get to this chaos PCA I think it's away let's go back to the the beginning In the beginning there were STM journal publishers and what they were doing
influence reject a little while later you have archives in aggregators getting involved in what they're doing influences the jets and of course what they're doing influence is the you know the the publishers and from the archives in the aggregators and then they all start influencing each other and then the Jats actually starts influencing the use of force what is in the jets this is what you do and not too long after that we see it's
not just the Journal of the STM journal publishers we see people putting books in the jets and even so magazines stuff image and it's like what that's a lot of stuff could check no we see it's not just the jets we have jacked extensions and customizations and subsets and I'm I'm including these majestic because really part of the larger jets pictures and without them to be pretty boring quite frankly and when I'm talking about if we look at the things that we've heard about just in this conference In 2010 we heard from
the American Chemical Society portico American Geophysical Union and the task of group they all had customizations extensions or subsets In 2011 we heard from a node mn out upon who had subsets or extensions in 2012 just a little bit what I told you what the bits was we're a bit more about it during a book panel and also hear from folks at PMC we talk about their journal front matter extension to the Jets so really the jets is just the Jets anymore it's a lot more and of course it's all influencing each other and of course it's influencing these guys and these guys and these guys you really it's a great big web of influence of practice in influence I really like simple pictures and this is a little bit messy so it's simple OK we have a group of users and user communities and now all influencing each other and then
we have the chassis extensions customization subsets they're all influencing each other and those groups are influencing each other as well it's nice it's neat it's predictable and this happened this is about
where we are and so this is where it gets into my speculation hence the road ahead part standardization is very important I don't think anybody would argue that point but standardization can also do something a little unpredictable it can introduce a chaos factor 2 things which seems counterintuitive but it does and this is why it does it this is the press release
from the jets the jets press releases and the couple quotes from just and this that like when you the standardization process brought awareness of the tags we to a larger and more varied audience we expect this wider audience will find uses for the tags we in new applications beyond its traditional users in publishing and archiving and that's the chaos we such that the so let's look back at the kind of
evolution we've seen in the job the Jets adjusts models to accommodate what's being done a great example of this is any time was actually in 1 . 0 the on interviews it's handled or we didn't you know but it wasn't there and it was then 1 . 1 but in the very beginning it wasn't and it wasn't entirely necessary in the very beginning because in the very beginning 10 years ago 10 + years ago we were capturing what was done in the pride because that's what publishers were doing they were printing you don't crack and video file you don't create an audio file so you don't necessarily need immediate test now 10
years ago was about when it started becoming very popular so media was 1 . 1 what about the Commission said that in show up until much later and 10 + years ago you had articles there were published with a copyright statement ends at the journal level there was probably a reprints statement all you for replay permissions top contact the Copyright Clearance Center but I was so the whole journal there was no individual article licenser permission statement it was time it didn't need to be in the Jack but now now needs to be addressed and you you have entire publications who follow an open-access model and if you're delivering just a single article from that publication you absolutely need to have a permissions tag be lost without it and it's not just the elements the atoms this actually was of course in
the end the tags we in the very beginning but now it's all over the place and we will hear from and a group from Japan this in the next 2 days who will tell us what they're doing with this actually is and it's really remarkable but when the Jets 1st started he didn't really have bilingual publication the way we see it
now you didn't need x Milan on everything you didn't need to capture alternatives of things you didn't need it so it wasn't there but now we need it the other way that the Jets evolves this it accommodated adjusts its models to accommodate where users know they should be doing and when we're talking about what should I do so a lot of you probably heard about work
and and the whole idea of in individual contributor identified identification as identifiers you have if you're searching for my paper on the eve of suggests conversion you wanna search on Laura
Kelly me not Laura Kelly the linguist Kelly the biologists and a lot a lot can that there so the idea of giving me a unique identifier it's of course it's been worked on by other groups groups outside Jack who were doing much more thorough job at this but we knew it was coming and so we gave you a way to tag it when it it is being used consistently but notice that what we're doing is we're accommodating things that are either already happening or we know will be happening so there's no predictive behavior here it's pretty much we see it we know it's coming will let you do it take a look at the evolution and publishing this is
Canada has always been and back in the day it was enough to have the that had the published that you were good so what you did with the data matters and that was enough but it's not enough anymore is it you can't just published a data can be done with it you have to send it here and there and everywhere else you have to do x with y within the with you have to do stuff with your data yeah so this evolution Is that what else are you doing with your
data yeah so it's not just what are you doing with your data it's what else and that of course is the big question mark I don't know what else to do if you don't know either that you know everything you know about is where we are now but it's coming white is this wider and more varied audience going to suggest that you do with your Jats data that's the what else
so this is where the picture left off this nice neat organized clean picture of 1 group influencing another and then we had to go insane so we have these new user groups and users and I can't be separate because I believe that new users will be coming not just from new users ends new user groups but from our existing users people invent new ways to do things all the time we're going to hear about a couple of them over the next few days and some of them are very very exciting come but I haven't linked to these anything because I don't know what's going to happen and you probably don't know what's going to happen even if you do it like to talk and get some numbers but it you know this this standardization even know it by its very name you know
it implies that it's making things more uniform and it is but it also has the side effects of making things more chaotic because you do have that wider audience you do you have those new user groups and you do have those new users you have things that you just not gonna see come so In my abstract for this paper In this talk so I asked the question how does the
jets continue to evolve without descending into chaos the short answer of course is that it doesn't the the careful unavoidable at least I believe it is unless you want things to be really really boring I don't want things we really really boring and I doubt anyone in this room knows either unless I haven't met yet and but the fact is that chaos happens and some really great things can come from chaos but you know that the connotation of chaos is of course a negative connotation and I don't think it deserves that so much and there are a lot of us myself being 1 who were absolute control freaks and I need to know what's going on and I need to know what's happening and surpasses really scary so when I look at the future of the Jets honestly I'm a little scared not because 0 my gosh it's gonna die out not ignore that absolutely not point it's 0 my gosh what else you guys gonna come up with to do what else might then have to write you code for what else might have to accommodate them and it's frightening but it's possible exciting so instead of taking best negative connotations descending into chaos the funded this way yeah does the jets
continue to evolve making the best use of the tail technique and I think that we all know that there are a lot of us out there are spinning appear who were very reluctant to accept change and to well not just accepted but to embrace it to really look around and say this incredible wave of change that's going on is going to affect me and it's going to make me learn new things are doing new things and it's going to be a little chaotic but if we accept that it's happening it's just like any sort of self-help program accepted on it so owned that the chaos is that it's happening and don't be oblivious to it don't stick your head in the sand don't pretend that it's going to pass you by because what's going to happen is if you try to do that is it will pass you by that so everything else the 2nd thing I think is very important is to utilize the available resources the same about the Jets community that I think needs to improve it is it's sense of community we are our own best ends most underutilized resources how many of you out there subscribe to the list OK and no keep those the
heap of him but how many of you have ever had a question about the jets that you sent to jets list all home the like 3 and let OK so how many people in the audience have ever had a question about how to deal with something in the text every and that is up now should have been out when I ask who sent the question to the Jets list I'm so consider this your chastisement of the conference and subscribe to list use the less remember that the people in this room are you or community there your resources now I know that you know
in publishing there's a lot of proprietary information and you can always share the specifics of what you're doing where you can ask questions and you can get feedback and you can throw ideas out there and I think that you should because if you're in this room who have a vested interest in the Japs and quite frankly I believe it to be your responsibility to do these things if you're not taking an active role in the community then I think you're doing yourself as much of the services
you are the community so please subscribe to the list if you have a question or a comment were a thought about something that can be done better please help it and while you're here in the next few days talk to each other you know what this is this is a great opportunity to meet people who are not just using what you're using but they're doing some of the same things that you're doing and more importantly there doing things that you're not doing that you might be able to benefit from if you knew about that to talk to each other and to get to know each other business cards if you haven't swap e-mail addresses whatever it is but remember that you all are your on the best resources for the future of the Jack net and costly because of 15 minutes journey is on its increments any question that any questions comments rebuttal the chastisement nothing OK and so we do have 1 the the quickly but in that the time while at TOD Carpenter Executive Director at myself thank you and and thank you to the entire community for all the work that you've done on contracts of the but 1 way that jets will continue to evolve as it has done under a different form Over the past decade is through the continued engagement and there is an expectation that there will be a maintenance agency of an organization to continually evolve jets as we move forward our standards of living documents and we need to keep them living and breathing in moving as we as we change and adapt so thank thank anybody else OK and so I'm going to introduce Exceptional introduces should we wait because the weapon yeah was entries and we are and yeah we are broadcasting over the level them Annex I so achieve close to schedule but I was way under some no I mean introduce our next speaker and who are actually 3 and we are joined by some folks from the American Institute of Physics we have richer keep they granites and Jennifer McAndrews they actually will be swapping on and off so we'll see and hear from all of that a few of the many

Abstract The JATS user community is growing in both number and diversity. With the acceptance of the JATS as a NISO standard, that's likely to continue. But what does that mean for the future of the JATS when its development has always been driven by the user community? How does the JATS continue to evolve without descending into chaos?
