Abstract

25 B/s, 50 B/s, 100 B/s.

Syrphus balteatus females which are ready to oviposit manoeuvre between bean plants (Vicia), which are densely infested with black bean lice (Aphis fabae). Rotations of up to 360 degrees made in whirring flight serve as visual orientation and the whirring flights underneath the colonies of plant-lice serve as olfactory orientation. The stream of scent from the plant-lice is drawn in. The following egg-laying behaviour is demonstrated with a number of examples.
