English | English The film shows three customs practised on the farms of the thinly settled Lower Alps area of Austria on the evening before the Feast of the Three Wise Men. Between the work (feeding, milking) and the evening meal, the animals are given a so-called Maulgab (Mouth Offering) with churchlike sacraments which is meant to work as a prophylactic against ghosts. Later the house is blessed with consecrated incense. And lastly so-called Sampermilch for a Berchte figure which is supposed to appear as a ghost in the night, is prepared and set out. A few spoonsful of this is eaten and the remainder fed to the pigs and poultry the next morning. |
