There starch is produced from one of the parts: a section of palm bark is split open by a man, Kapindi, using a steel adze, and then he pounds the fibrous pith using a sago pounder made from hard wood. The washing of the starch from the fibres is done by a woman, Kambanpi, after having erected the washing apparatus with the trough of a sago leaf base and the strainer from the leaf base of coconut palms. The flower sheath of a palm is used for collecting the water containing starch. After the settling the starch is filled into a basket in order to allow that the rest of the water can drip off. The following day, the starch is stored in a big earthen storage pot. |
