English | English The oogonia of the Stephanopyxis turris, are formed directly from the vegetative cells. Pronounced longitudinal growth is followed by the two meiotic divisions of the nucleus; there are no cytokinesis. After each division of the nucleus one of the daughter nuclei becomes pycnotic. The one-egged oogon opens up and is fertilized by a spermium. The zygote swells up to form the auxospore, increasing significantly in volume. By succedaneous secretion of two shells the first cell emerges from the auxospore; this cell grows to become the colony of a new clone. |
