Halbhecht. In den völlig transparenten Eiern sind die Bewegungen des Embryos und die Blutzirkulation gut zu erkennen. Nach dem Schlüpfen schwimmen die Tiere senkrecht mit dem Kopf nach oben. Eine Woche später ist die normale waagerechte Körperstellung erreicht. Außerdem sind Atembewegungen und Fressen zu beobachten.

Development of garfishes from the egg to the adult stage. The eggs are transparent and therefor the movements of the blood and of the embryo as a whole are well observable. After hatching the young swim in an upright position with the head pointing upwards. The normal horizontal position of the body is reached within the first week. The movements performed when eating, breathing and swimming are also shown.
